Holy Name Uses Strong Run Game to Surpass Normandy 35-14

**THIS RECAP IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY **

Parma, OH

It was a pivotal GLC tilt as Normandy hosted Holy Name tonight from Byers Field in Parma.  Holy Name stayed hot with a 35-14 victory over the Invaders.

Holy Name used a solid ground game once again. Even without normal starting tailback Kriztion Sanchez, they had plenty of weapons.  Starting quarterback Jayvon Williams ran for 29 yards on 2 carries with a touchdown.  He also threw for 54 yards.

Austin “Wondo” Wondolowski picked up the slack with 99 yards on 9 carries while scoring once.  He also caught 2 balls for 13 yards.  Keason Garner ran for 114 yards on just 4 carries with a pair of touchdowns. Nick Kucera had 2 carries for 11 yards and a touchdown.  Vincenzo Constanzo piled up 86 yards on the ground as well.

As for Normandy, only 3 players touched the ball the entire night on offense.  Quarterback Elijah Gray ran for 109 yards on 20 carries.  He also threw 2 touchdowns but also 3 interceptions as well.  Running back Curtis Starks had 28 yards on the ground and 75 yards receiving, with a touchdown catch.  Austin Stash also had a touchdown catch.

Holy Name took over at their own 20 as the Normandy field goal attempt was missed from 37 yards out. They wasted no time marching down the field with a mixed attack of Keason Garner.  He had a 22 yard catch and then and 18-yard touchdown run on the drive. Just like that, it was 7-0 with 6:56 to go. The drive was also assisted by a 28-yard run from Austin Wondolowski.

After an Invader 3 and out, the Namers got the ball back near midfield. A 20-yard run by Williams would help them set up shop.  Up next was “Wondo” taking it 10 more yards for a first and ten from the Invader 12.  A few players later it was Austin “Wondo” Wondolowski taking it from 8 yards out to score.  The extra point was missed, and it was 13-0 Holy Name with 2:26 to go in the first quarter.

Another 3 and out would allow the Namers to start on the opposing 38-yard line. They faced a 4rth and 2 early into the drive, and Wondolowski picked up 10. A few plays later, it was Williams taking it himself for a 9-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0 with 10:40 to go in the opening half.

The next time Holy Name got the ball, they wasted no time.  A 1 one play 87 drive was all Keason Garner as he took it to the house and it was 11 chasing 1!  What a blazing run to make it 27 -0 with 8:08 still to play in the opening half.

Holy Name started their next drive on the Invader 30-yard line after a Matthew Motrunecs interception of Gray.  It was more ground and pound for the Green Wave.  With Williams and Wondolowski both knocked out of the game, this time it was Nick Kucera pounding it in to extend the lead to 35-0 where the score stood at halftime.

Normandy began their comeback attempt the first time they touched the ball in the second half.  Elijah Gray hit Austin Stash in stride to cut into the lead at 35-7 with 7:38 to play in the third quarter. The Invaders would attempt to get it closer before quarter end, but couldn’t as it remained 35-7 at the close of the quarter.

A 25-yard touchdown pass from Gray to Starks made it 35-14 early into the fourth quarter.  But that was as close as Normandy could make it.

Next week Holy Name will look to stay hot as they host Buckeye.
