Lakewood, OH- Holy Name continues their winning ways against Lakewood 82-78 in yet another hardwood classic that may go a long way in determining the eventual winner of the Great Lakes Conference.

Heading into this contest, the fans expected a low scoring affair dominated by defense. It only took a few minutes for fans to realize this wouldn’t be the case. Max Bollin began his day with a triple followed up by an and-one to give him 6 quick points. Luke Vannucci matched Bollin’s triple, but that would only be the tip of the iceberg for the sharpshooter. Lakewood would mount the points on the Green Wave quickly and jumped out to an early 16-11 advantage. Holy Name was able to put this run behind them as Bollin and Adam Humenik went on to combine for 19 out of the 26 points the Green Wave scored in this quarter. Vannucci added another triple and field goal to take his tally up to 8 points heading into the second. Dominic Peck, Luke Bonvissuto, Lucas Seguine, and Drew Jablonowski all added to the Ranger scoreboard in the opening frame. After a back and forth opening 8 minutes, Holy Name led 26-21 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter can be defined in one word—Three’s. Only 14 out of the 43 combined points in this quarter came from shots other than 3’s. Bollin had 3 triples, Seguine added 1, and Vannucci connected on 5 from beyond the arc. Combined, there were nine 3’s in this quarter. Both teams went on runs in this quarter with Lakewood starting off hot. Holy Name took things over soon after, and Lakewood snatched momentum back over at the death in the first half. The momentum came back as Vannucci made Collin Hall Johnson commit a block too early with a pump fake, leading to him draining a triple to tie up the game 45-45 as the teams headed into the locker room.

The third quarter continued the trend of back-and-forth basketball. Lakewood came out of the half on a 9-2 run. This included Vannucci adding another triple to his tally. However, the rest of the points the Rangers posted in this quarter came from inside the arc. Humenik cut the Lakewood led to 4 with a triple as Coach Patton called time with the scoreboard reading 54-50 Lakewood. Aaron Riley added a triple of his own while Drew Styers began to emerge offensively and Bollin went 8 for 9 from the free throw line this quarter. Jablonowski added a pair of free throws for Lakewood, but was held to 10 points overall as the combination of Joe Lewis and Adam Humenik played tough defense on the senior. Heading into the final quarter, Holy Name pulled away slightly as they led 68-62.

The fourth quarter began with Holy Name going on a 6-2 run to lead 74-64 over Lakewood. Coach Cammock called time for his Rangers and brought his unit back to life. Following his team talk, Lakewood went on an 11-2 run to tie things back up at 74-74. Vannucci would add his final two 3’s, taking his game tally to 38 points. As teams traded fouls, Holy Name began to slightly pull away. This was led by Adam Humenik sinking his final two free throws. After making a three, Lakewood got the ball back. However, time wasn’t on their side as the Green Wave closed things out to get the 82-78 win over the Rangers.

Holy Name improves to 6-5 and remains undefeated in GLC play. The Green Wave will put their GLC winning streak on the line once again Friday against Buckeye. Lakewood falls to 8-4 on the season and will take on Brady McKnight and the Riverside Beavers on January 13 as they look for win number 9.
