Holy Name Hires Mike Masetta as their New Varsity Baseball Coach

Parma Heights, OH- Namer Nation has cause for celebration as Mike Masetta has been named the new head baseball coach. This hiring comes after former head coach Tim Carter stepped down after the 2023 campaign, ending his second stint with the team. Masetta might have big shoes to fill replacing the former Brewers’ 14th round draft pick, but his experience speaks for itself. Prior to taking the Holy Name job, he coached at Aurora, Tallmadge, and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin in positions ranging from JV to varsity. Beyond high school baseball, he has coached for travel organizations and the Cleveland Bulls. The Bulls were a college wood bat summer program that took home the 2005 Ohio state title and ranked 6th in what was their final season.

Following the announcement, Holy Name’s athletic director Rich Kozub said, “I want to welcome Coach Masetta to Holy Name. I’m really happy to have a coach with his kind of experience. He has experience at all different types of levels and institutions. I am very impressed with how he conducts himself and what he has to say about baseball and what he will bring to our program. You can not help but notice his passion and the excitement he brings. We are so excited to have him as our head baseball coach.”

Coach Masetta shares this excitement saying, “I am humbled, honored, and excited for this opportunity. God truly has a wonderful way of presenting us with the right opportunities at the right times.” He also says that when applying for the job, he knew that Holy Name has great people who are very supportive of the community.

Masetta will be tasked with improving upon the Green Wave’s 8-16 record last season and has plenty of talent to do so. The losses of Jack Topolski and Jaedin Hurd to Eastern Michigan and Coppin State respectively will hurt, but there is plenty of talent waiting in the wings. Additionally, a large chunk of last year’s varsity roster returns with a few transfer students adding to the established talent pool.  The offseason program will begin shortly as Masetta had a successful meeting with the team Tuesday afternoon to introduce himself and his vision for Holy Name baseball. Masetta says, “The staff and I are looking forward to getting started with these outstanding young men. We were brought together for a reason and we are excited to see where our journey leads because with God, all things are possible.” There is excitement around the program for the future, the only thing left to do is to play ball.
