Hoban pitches 39-0 shutout over Akron East

Akron, Ohio – In a battle between two eastside Akron schools on Saturday afternoon at Dowed Field, the Hoban Knights emerged victorious with a 39-0 win over Akron East.

Hoban drove down the field, but was held to a 24-yard field goal. Senior kicker Ryan Bruns put Hoban on top, 3-0, at the 5:47 mark of the first quarter.

Akron East moved down the field on their ensuing drive, getting into Knight territory, but came up empty. They would force a turnover, as Ibraheem Kamara recovered a fumble on defense. Once again, Hoban held the Dragon offense off the board.

The Knights increased their lead to 9-0 when senior tailback Caleb Jones took a 26-yard handoff to paydirt with 6:17 left in the first half. They took advantage of a short field thanks to a partially blocked punt.

A bad snap on an East punt attempt put the Knights in great field position, and they cashed in when Tylan Boykin took a carry 18 yards to the house, increasing the Hoban margin to 16-0.

The Knights would add to their lead when Boykin found sophomore Payton Cook for a six-yard touchdown reception. This made the Hoban lead 22-0 at the break.

Hoban added to their lead in the third quarter.

Boykin tossed his second score of the game from six yards out to Wright State baseball commit Parker Falkenstein. He ran in the ensuing two-point try, pushing the lead to 30-0, triggering the running clock.

The Hoban defense was impressive throughout the game, making stop after stop. Junior Nick Crawford sacked East tailback Ziaire Stevens in the end zone for a safety to increase the lead to 32-0.

After the ensuing free kick, freshman tailback Brayton Feister rushed for a big gain to move the ball into East territory. Two plays later, he capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run.

Hoban sophomore Jackson Callaway picked off a pass in the fourth quarter, as the reserves gained playing time late.

Archbishop Hoban moves to 4-0 and travels to Euclid to face Saint Ignatius next Friday.

Akron East drops to 3-1. They host Youngstown East in their final non-conference matchup next Friday.
