The #2 Archbishop Hoban Knights (7-0) raced out to a 28-8 halftime lead and held on for a 28-16 win over the #5 Glenville Tarblooders (5-3) in a battle of Northeast Ohio’s best. Senior RB Caleb Jones carried the load for the Knights, rushing for 112 yards. Freshman RB Brayton Feister added both rushing and receiving touchdowns.
Tarblooders Strike First
After forcing a punt on Hoban’s opening drive, Glenville wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. D’Shawntae Jones took the first handoff for 50 yards, setting the Tarblooders up in Knights’ territory. Three plays later, Damarion Witten took a QB draw 27 yards to the house, and after a two-point conversion from Jones, Glenville led 8-0 early.
On the ensuing kickoff, Elbert “Rock” Hill IV took it all the way, 92 yards, to kick off the Hoban scoring. Midway through the first, the Tarblooders led 8-7. Following a poor Glenville punt, the Knights would strike again on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Tylan Boykin to Brayton Feister to take a 14-8 lead after one.
Hoban’s defense came alive and kept the Tarblooders’ offense from getting going, forcing another punt on the next drive. Starting from their own 45, the Knights went 55 yards in seven plays, capped off by a two-yard scoring plunge from Feister to extend the lead to 21-8.
Unfortunately for Glenville, their next two drives ended in fumbles, the second leading to an 11-yard touchdown pass from Boykin to Deon Rodgers to make it 28-8 Hoban at the break.
Defense Dominates
The first two drives for each squad in the second half ended point-less, including a missed 34-yard field goal from the Knights. With time running out in the third, Glenville started their drive backed up to the eight-yard line. In the next ten plays, the Tarblooders went 92 yards and got into the endzone on a 15-yard run from Jones to narrow the gap to 28-16.
Glenville would get one more shot in the fourth quarter, but the drive saw them backed up deep in their own territory. On third and long from inside the one, Jones found Donald Overby for a huge 67-yard completion to keep the drive alive.
Down inside the Hoban 20, Rock Hill picked off Arvell Nelson to seal the game. It would take 11 plays, but the Knights ran out the remainder of the clock to walk away with a 28-16 victory to stay unbeaten.
Keys to the Game
Crowned Homecoming King at halftime, Hoban senior Devin Bell had himself a ball game. The Miami (OH) commit lived in the Glenville backfield all night and came away with multiple sacks. The Knights’ defense, save for a couple of big plays, kept the Tarblooders’ offense from finding any rhythm.
For Glenville, the final score shouldn’t be all that disappointing. After losing their starting QB, the Tarblooders had to rotate three guys under center (Witten, Jones, and Nelson). Despite this setback, they hung in there with one of the best teams in the country for 48 minutes.
Next Week
The Tarblooders drop to 5-3 overall on the season and will look to get some positive momentum rolling next week when they take on Senate League foe Cleveland JFK (3-2). The Fighting Eagles fell to John Marshall 41-6 in Week 8.
For Hoban, the victory further solidifies them as one of the top teams in the country, and they’ll look to remain unbeaten next Saturday when they travel to New York to take on St. Francis (1-4).
