Highland Hornets Win 58-7 over Kent Roosevelt

How fitting is it that arguably the greatest running back that Medina County has ever seen now holds the record for most touchdowns?

In a five touchdown effort, Casey Myser broke Black River’s finest Andrew Vaughn’s record for total touchdowns with 83 as the Highland Hornets beat the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders 58-7. Myser also tied Vaughn’s rushing touchdown record with 72 with four on the ground.

Kent Roosevelt and 6’5″ senior quarterback Gavin Peeps were getting towards midfield during the beginning of the game, only for their offense to sputter out. On the Hornets first drive of the ballgame, Grady Gibb had a big run and completed a big pass to Jake Weber before Myser capped off the drive with a touchdown. The Rough Riders converted a fourth down with a Peeps scramble to the Highland 19 yard line. But on the next play, the jet sweep was botched and recovered by the Hornets’ Jameson Gordon. On the ensuing drive, Weber caught a 31 yard touchdown pass from Gibb to make it 14-0.

The second quarter was all Hornets as Liam Zielinski had an interception on fourth down. Gibb started the scoring in the quarter with another touchdown pass, this one to Nick Dobkowski. Kallen Whitling then had a mammoth interception return to the Roosevelt 10 which led to another Myser touchdown. The Hornets defense started to clamp up during the second quarter stopping Peeps on a fourth down fake punt. Highland would eventually take a 44-0 lead at the half courtesy of a 43 yard field goal by Jonah Kowza at the end of the second quarter.

With a running clock all second half, Highland would summon Landon Kuzma to punt for the only time that game and would down the Riders to the two. After forcing a Kent Roosevelt punt, Casey would set the record with a touchdown run on the left side to make it 51-0. The Rough Riders in the fourth quarter scored on a long and winding drive, but the Hornets answered back at the end of the game with a Frankie Iannaggi touchdown which made it 58-7. And when Gavin Peeps took a courtesy kneel down, the Hornets won in their last game ever against Roosevelt.

The Highland Hornets improve to 7-0 on the season and will take on the 6-1 Revere Minutemen next week on the road. The Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders go down to 4-4 on the season and will go to Aurora next week.
