With the 45-7 win over the Eastlake North Rangers Friday night, Kenston improves its record to 4-0. Along with the perfect start to the season, the Bombers have now outscored its opponents 162-17 through four weeks of the season.
Kenston head coach Jeff Grubich only cares about one thing; doing whatever it takes to secure the win each and every week and numbers beyond that don’t really matter.
“We don’t care about numbers, the only thing that matters are wins,” coach Grubich explained. “Obviously it’s something we strive for and we want to play great offense and great defense and we’re doing that right now. The schedule is only going to get tougher as anybody in the Western Reserve Conference can knock you off.”
Kenston’s elusive running back Jack Porter–a Wake Forest commit–stole the show in the first half of play Friday night. The senior turned 11 carries into 102 yards and three touchdowns to help give the Bombers a comfortable 21-7 lead at the half.
The offensive explosion from the senior all started after he ran in a touchdown from 14 yards out to give the Bombers an early 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Eastlake North would later respond and tie the game at seven apiece after Chris Molica’s one-yard quarterback sneak to open up the second quarter of play.
From there, the rest of the half was dominated by Kenston from both sides of the ball. Porter would add in rushing touchdowns from 1 yard and 17 yards to give the Bombers a 21-7 lead heading into halftime.
The momentum carried over for the Bombers to start the second half of play. This time, it was through the air. It all started with Senior quarterback Jon Tomcufcik finding fellow senior wide receiver Tyler Mintz 29 yards out to push the Bomber lead to 28-7 less than four minutes into the second half.
Tomcufcik was just getting warmed up as he would later connect with senior wide receiver Javion Middleton and Mintz for the second time of the half. The additional touchdowns would start the running clock as Kenston headed into the final quarter with a 42-7 lead.
All the damage would be done following an impressive second and third quarter where the Bombers outscored the Rangers 35-7. As Kenston continues to build off of its Division III State Championship season from a year ago, one thing must continue to develop throughout the team; leadership.
“Our biggest thing is leadership,” coach Grubich explained after the commanding win. “We need guys to be dudes and be the dudes that are leading this football team and to understand that if you have some adversity, you have to be able to handle it and have to be able to lead and get better.”
