Has AEW Ruined the Legacy of Adam Copeland

Adam “Edge” Copeland arrived in AEW in October of  2023 as was seen as a possible savior for the sinking company.  It was hoist upon his shoulders to bring the company back to respectability with engaging storylines and five-star matches, much like he did as one of the greatest heels in WWE history.  Instead, in a matter of 18 plus months, the company has made him look like a complete joke.

His ex-tag team partner and best friend, Christian Cage has already gotten the better of him multiple times, costing him two different championships and making him out to look like a total fool.  Christian screwed “Cope” out of the TNT Championship just minutes after he won it.  Then, a few weeks back Cage did it again when he inserted himself into the AEW World Title match with Jon Moxley and ended up getting tapped out while Cope could only sit back and watch his title dreams disappear.

Making him look even worse was the fact that no one is talking about his matches as much as they are talking about the “spots” that have gone down in them.  For instance, the jump from the top of the cage at AEW Double or Nothing in May of 2024 in which he suffered a legitimate fractured tibia after leaping from the top of the cage.  Or, even worse, the asinine spot of his “nailed” baseball bat crashing into the back of Moxley last week on Dynamite.

Edge was known as a solid performer in the ring and a legendary heel outside of it, in his short time in AEW they have consistently made him look like  a patsy with limited intelligence. He not only gets outsmarted in the ring, but when he tries to cut a promo outside of it, it just comes across forced and confused.

Perhaps worst of all was the forced name change to “Cope”.  We all understand he cannot go by Edge any longer while in AEW, but why “Cope”.  It sounded beyond stupid, and it is crystal clear they wanted another 4 letter name since they couldn’t have “Edge”.  No one complained when they called him by his real name of Adam Copeland, why not stick with it?

Now that he is out of the “World Title Picture” and a feud with Cash Wheeler seems on the horizon, I have to wonder what draw “Cope” has left.  He left the WWE because he felt as though they had nothing for him, what AEW has shown is not much better.

On this stage, I think clearly, may be the Alter Bridge lyric in his theme, but right about now, if Adam Copeland is thinking clearly he has to be saying to himself, “what Hell did I do?”
