Green’s Aerial Assault Overpowers North Olmsted

The lethal one-two punch of senior quarterback Trevor Van Horn and senior wide receiver Trey Martin, was all Green needed to dismantle the North Olmsted Eagles Friday night, 43-14.

Both teams came off blow out wins last week. Green had a wire-to-wire victory over Ellet, winning 48-6. North Olmsted throttled North Ridgeville 52-7 but the Bulldogs were able to replicate their dominance once more.

A quick four and out for the Eagles to start the game summed up how the rest of their night would go. Van Horn responded quickly and took it in himself for a six yard touchdown scamper. The fast scoring would continue on the next possession for Green. Van Horn tossed a bubble screen pass over to star wide out Trey Martin and he sprinted down the left side line for a 69 yarder.

Even though 14-0 is a great way to start any first quarter, the visiting orange and white kept their foot on the Eagles’ beaks. North Olmsted’s defense had their best drive of the entire game ruined on a 3rd & 19. With the Bulldogs backed up near their own endzone, Van Horn dropped back to pass. He was forced outside of the pocket and sent a beautiful dime down the right side of the field to a well-defended Samino Manson for a monster gain of 47. It was his only catch of the evening, but it seemed to snatch the heart right out of the home team.

Van Horn would complete this sequence with another touchdown pass to Martin again, this time for eight yards. After a 21 point blitzkrieg, the Eagles had to find some type of momentum to build upon. They did just that, taking almost three minutes off the clock with Jared Kelley adding his fourth touchdown in two games, off of a two yard run for paydirt. However, Trey Martin had another trick up his sleeve to end any hope that the Eagles might have had.

This touchdown drive was the fastest of the game at 15 seconds. Van Horn threw a deep bomb to Martin down the middle of the turf on the first play and he would take it 72 yards to the house. Martin was simply unguardable as he finished with videogame like stats, 11 receptions for 245 yards and five touchdowns. Van Horn was nearly untouched in the pocket, going an efficient 18/29 for 356 yards and 5 TDs. He also tacked on 10 carries for 38 yards and a TD as well.

I talked briefly with Green’s stat tracker and he mentioned that Martin has been receiving attention from Division I schools Youngstown State and Duke University, respectfully.

Another reason why Green was able to have their way tonight was thanks to the team’s defense on Jared Kelley, QB Xavier Balson, and running back Bryson Burgess. Balson was under duress and did not have much time to throw. His stat line proves it as he was held to 9/17 for 66 yards. Kelley was held to 18 yards receiving and 2 yards rushing. Burgess, who also broke out last week for 10 rushes, 170 yards and 3 touchdowns, was kept in check to 59 yards.

The 1-1 Eagles will look to bounce back next week as they face Amherst Steele, their second matchup of a three game home stand. The 2-0 Bulldogs will play Garfield Heights for their first home game of the season.

Player of the Game: Trey Martin 11 catches, 246 yards, 5 TD

  1. I’m a N.O. alumnus, so the result was not the best for me, but this is one great write-up, Mr. Horvath! I look forward to reading your work this high school football season. Well done.
