Sears
This one is a bit more recent, and another sign of the times I guess. But in its heyday, you could go to Sears and get your teeth fixed, your car fixed and pick up an outfit with some outdoor and indoor games as well. You needed a new washer and dryer, frig, yard tools, yes, they had all of that! It was also my favorite place to park. Sad to see it go.
The Old Arcade
I’m talking about the good arcade with several claw machines, awesome arcade games and a very large air hockey table. Remember it was so big, it was like a mini Chuck E Cheese as you could turn in your tickets for prizes. With the smell of the food court pumping through it, and the noise of the kids screaming and teens blasting music in Record Den next door, it just had a special feel to it.
Record Den / Sam Goody / Camelot
Jeff Bezo has killed more retail store owners than any pandemic could even dream of. But even Bezo’s insane greed can’t take the blame for stores like Best Buy, Record Den’s and various other electronic and music stores falling on hard times. It is just flat out too easy to get free music anytime you want it now. Why buy a record or CD when you can push two buttons and get whatever you want to listen to for zero cost.
Back in the day, you could get a cheesesteak, a record and play some sweet arcade games all within 15 feet of each other.
