It is no secret Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted is going through a tough time. The establishment has had some new additions as of late with Phoenix Theatres and the incoming Texas Roadhouse later this year. Both should help spike spirits and the desire to visit. However, even with those establishments arriving, it is still lightyears away from the glory years it had in the late 80’s, 90’s and early parts of the 2000’s.
I thought it would be fun to go back and list the stores I miss the most. Keeping in mind I’m 42 years old, a 2000 graduate and have lived in North Olmsted pretty much my entire life. Let’s have some fun and enjoy the list together. Please leave a comment with the ones you miss the most as well.
Walden Books
It is no secret that I love to read and Walden books was a staple of every visit to the mall. In fact, many times, it was my first stop. It is sad that book stores don’t exist anymore. They just don’t. Now, you cannot go into a bookstore that doesn’t double as a coffee shop and toy store. Sad, just sad!
Also, I will let this one rip since I’m already on the soap box, what is the deal with “Manga Books”. What the Hell is that? I went into a BAM recently, and they had one tiny aisle of sports books, and no less then 5 huge displays of Manga books. What world are we living in right now? For the love of God! Okay, moving on….
Kay-Bee Toy Store
Those tiny aisles packed with toys and games were a slice of Heaven on Earth! Oh man do I miss this one the most. I said it last week in my column about how the death of toy stores destroyed the innocence of many, and that a trip to Target or Wal Mart will never be the same. I always felt like Kay-Bee was the baby brother of Toys R Us. In a perfect world, your parents would take you to both for that great report card, birthday, or just special day. I miss it, as a father of two kids ages 7 and 10, I miss it now more then ever.
