Macedonia. OH: In a game that experienced rain and wind throughout, Glenville (11-3) scored when it mattered most, taking down the defending Division V Champion Perry Pirates (12-2) 12-6 in overtime. After the Tarblooders got a stop on Perry’s first drive in overtime, junior running back Chris Newell Jr. took the handoff 20-yards for a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage, clinching an overtime victory.
First Half
With the rain and wind playing a huge factor, both squads went three-and-out on their opening possessions. Late in the first quarter, Glenville started their third drive of the game on their 20. Big runs from Romell Phillips and LaMarques Greenwood set the Tarblooders up deep in Pirate territory. On third and goal, Chris Newell plowed in from a yard out to put Glenville up 6-0 early in the second quarter.
Perry drove out near midfield on the ensuing possession, but coughed up the ball near midfield, turning it over to Glenville. Luckily for the Pirates, the Tarblooders fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, giving the ball back to Perry at the Glenville 49. A pass interference call would move them closer, but three straight incomplete passes turned the ball back over to Glenville.
Following a Glenville punt, the Pirates would put together their best drive so far in the contest. With just over six minutes remaining in the half, Perry would march all the way down into the redzone but were stopped short on fourth down. Two carries from the Tarblooders ate up the final minute of the half and Glenville went into the break with a 6-0 lead.
Second Half
Perry came out of the halftime break hot, putting together a 14-play, 75 yard drive. On 2nd & goal from the 10, Walter Moses found running back Carter Hopkins for a 10-yard Pirates touchdown, evening the score at 6-6 midway through the third quarter.
Glenville would respond with a long drive of their own, working it down inside the redzone. Eniere Lemon attempted a 39-yard field goal but the ball sailed right, keeping things tied at 6-6. After forcing a three-and-out, the Tarblooders started their next drive in Perry territory. Lemon lined up for another field goal and it appeared the kick went in, but a penalty on Glenville negated the play. An incomplete pass on the next play turned the ball back over to the Pirates.
With just over five minutes remaining in the fourth, both sides traded punts back and forth. At the end of regulation, both teams were tied at 6-6.
Overtime
Perry received the first possession of overtime and it could not have went worse for the Pirates. Facing a 4th & 35, Moses connected with Jimmy Ashburn for 23 yards but it was not enough, giving the ball back to Glenville.
On the Tarblooders’ first play of the possession, Chris Newell Jr. took the handoff to the left side and rumbled for a 20-yard touchdown, giving Glenville a 12-6 victory and keeping their hopes of a Division IV three-peat alive.
