Glenville shuts out St. Vincent-St. Mary, 25-0, to kickoff 2022 campaign

Akron, Ohio – The Glenville Tarblooders kicked off the 2022 campaign with a resounding 25-0 victory over host St. Vincent-St. Mary.

SVSM moved the ball to the Glenville 23 late in the first quarter, but the Tarblooder defense held the line, forcing a turnover on downs.

In the second quarter, senior tailback J’Vaughn Goodson took a handoff 20 yards to the house. The ensuing point after was blocked, and Glenville led 6-0 early in the second.

After another defensive stand, Glenville junior tailback D’Shawntae Jones took a carry 28 yards to paydirt. Goodson converted the ensuing PAT, and the Tarblooders increased their lead to 13-0 with 8:14 left in the second.

St. Vincent St. Mary moved into Glenville territory again, but the Tarblooder defense held on downs once again. On the ensuing possession, the Irish got a huge break when senior defensive end Nathan Lenz recovered a fumble.

The Irish could not take advantage, and punted the ball away. Despite starting deep in their own territory, Glenville was up to the task.

Quarterback Deonte Rucker found junior Damarion Witten for a 61-yard gain to flip the field and put the Tarblooders into the red zone. After a pass interference penalty kept the drive alive, D’ Shawntae Jones rushed for his second score of the game with :19.1 left in the half to put Glenville up 19-0.

In the third quarter, the Tarblooders increased their lead to 25-0, thanks to a 44-yard touchdown by D’Shawntae Jones.

From there, the defense held up to secure the shutout. Juniors Freddie Johnson and Bryce West made huge plays on defense for the Tarblooders, and another junior, Jermaine Agee, picked off a pass in the fourth.

The Glenville defense held St. Vincent-St. Mary to 72 yards on the night.

The junior tailback had a game Thursday night. He had 13 carries for 135 yards and three scores, including a 44-yarder to cap off the scoring in the third quarter.
