AVON, OH – Glenville entered Avon with revenge on their minds after last year’s blowout defeat and got it big time with a dramatic 27-21 win over the Eagles. It was a wild night that saw big plays on both sides of the ball for Glenville to hang on for the win.

Glenville was paced by speedy and powerful tailback D’Shawntae Jones who carried the ball 12 times for 126 yards while scoring twice. He didn’t do it alone in the backfield however as J’Vaughn Goodson also ran for 95 yards on 9 carries. Quarterback Deonte Rucker threw for 61 yards with a touchdown on 6 of 20 passing.

For Avon, it was Jakorion Caffey rushing the ball 19 times for 68 yards while scoring once. Caffey also caught 4 passes for 32 yards. Backup tailback Gavin Ehrhardt chipped in with 41 yards on the ground and 24 receiving yards.

Leading the passing attack was senior quarterback Sam DeTillio with 202 yards throwing on 16 of 31 passing with a touchdown and interception.  DeTillio also rushed the ball 8 times for 58 yards.

His main target was Drew Lindsay with 4 catches for 62 yards.  Cam Santee caught one ball for a 44 yard touchdown.  Ethan Holbrook had 2 catches for 39 yards while Lance Etienne had a big 9 yard catch in the game closing moments.

Joe Weatherspoon picked off Deonte Rucker on the first play from scrimmage.  It was a deep ball so the Eagles took over on their own 32-yard line. A few plays into the drive they approached midfield when Gavin Ehrhardt took a screen pass 20 yards breaking tackles along the way. Moments later a Drew Lindsey reception got them closer, and then a Caffey 5-yard jaunt would punch it in for the games first points.

Glenville wasted no time answering back as D’Shawntae Jones ripped off a run of 43 yards followed by a 21-yard J’Vaughn Goodson run to set up shop deep in Eagle territory. A few plays later they would cash in with a 5-yard touchdown toss to Damarion Witten to tie the score at 7 with 5:11 to play in the first quarter.

After an Eagle three and out, it took Glenville one play to strike on a 33-yard touchdown run by D’Shawntae Jones. Just like that, the Tarblooders led 13-7 after the missed extra point, still in the first quarter. The score would remain 13-7 as the quarter came to a close with the Eagles driving towards midfield.

The Eagles continued to chip away at the Glenville defense with short chunk plays.  Ehrhardt would bust out a 33-yard sprint down the middle of the field that brought it to the Glenville 1 yard line.  Sam DeTillio took it from there. This touchdown run by DeTillio helped the Eagles recapture a 14-13 lead.

The Tarblooders didn’t blink as they then took their turn and marched right down the field with little resistance. This time they mixed it up with a variety of passes and runs until it was first and goal from the Eagle 6-yard line. Jones would take it from there with his second touchdown run of the night.  The two-point conversion was good, and Glenville led Avon 21-14 with 4:31 to play in the first half.

The Eagles, down 21-14, came out soaring to start the second half.  On their opening drive, it was Sam DeTillio going deep and finding a wide-open Cam Santee streaking towards the endzone to tie the game at 21 apiece. The game would enter the fourth quarter by that same score.

The Eagles got it back with 9:19 left in the game on a short field when DeTillio hit Ethan Holbrook for 18 yards to get them moving.  The drive would fizzle however, and they would attempt a 31-yard field goal from Seth Warrick that sailed a bit left to leave the game tied.

Glenville took over and Goodson went to work with back to back to back runs of 25, 20 and 10 yards to put it at the Eagle 27 yard line. A few plays later the Tarblooders scored as Goodson crossed the goal line while getting hit.  They then went for two and failed to convert, as the score remained 27-21 Glenville with 5:02 left to play.

The Eagles got it back at their 13 yard line.   They faced a fourth and 4 deep in their own territory when DeTillio scrambled out of the pocket and took off for 34 huge yards towards midfield. They then called for a jet sweep that Lindsey decided to pass it to Holbrook for 21 yards.  Lance Etienne then caught a pass for 9 yards to keep the drive moving to the Glenville 25-yard line.

Glenville made a great tackle keeping him in bounds, forcing the Eagles to burn their last timeout. DeTillio then got hit on his next pass and it was picked off to end the night.

Players of the game

Glennville – D’Shawntae Jones with 2 TD’s and 126 rushing yards
