Westlake, Ohio – Hugh Sullivan’s walkoff hit in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled host Westlake to a 3-2 win over Medina Buckeye in the GLC Conference Championship Game.
Westlake jumped on top, 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to a Hugh Sullivan single.
In the top of the third, Hugh Kichurchak led off with a triple to right field. Two outs later, Buckeye infielder Preston DiMarco drilled a single to center field to tie the game.
Mike Midea followed with an RBI single to give the Bucks the 2-1 lead.
From there, the teams traded zeroes thanks to stellar pitching from Joey Cash and Chris Protos.
In the top of the sixth, Buckeye had a chance to increase their lead, but a pickoff at third base thwarted those chances.
Nick DeAngelo hit a game-tying double to right field to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Demons had a chance to take the lead with runners on second and third.
However, Joey Cash dug deep and got a strikeout, groundout, and fly out to keep the game tied.
Greyson Elyederani came on in relief for Westlake and worked a scoreless top of the seventh, setting the state for the Demons in the bottom half.
Drew Arkwright led off with a single to left field. A bunt single by
Junior Hugh Sullivan delivered a walk-off single to right field to set off a raucous celebration for the Demons.
Westlake (18-3) hosts Max Hayes on Tuesday afternoon to open up OHSAA postseason play. The winner of the contest will face Barberton on Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Protos had ten strikeouts in six innings of work, allowing just a pair of runs. Hugh Sullivan went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and RBIs.
Medina Buckeye (14-9) hosts the winner of Bard Early College and Lake Catholic on Thursday afternoon in OHSAA postseason play.
Sophomore pitcher Joey Cash (7-2) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He also struck out seven hitters.
