Girls Basketball: Avon Lake Cruises to Win at Elyria
Elyria, OH — It was the Avon Lake Shoregals who cruised to a 59-21 win over the Elyria Lady
Pioneers Saturday afternoon at the Pioneer gym.
Fans barely had time to take their seats before the first points of the game were scored. Avon
Lake won the tip and converted a quick layup in the first 10 seconds. Elyria’s Bella Sauer
answered with a three-pointer to give the Lady Pioneers their lone lead of the game at 3-2.
From there, Avon Lake closed the quarter on a 19-3 run to take a 21-6 lead into the second.
In the second quarter, it was more of the same for the Shoregals as they put up 21 more points.
Avon Lake got contributions from multiple players, including six points from sophomore Riley
Koury. The Shoregals’ defense remained stiff as well, holding Elyria to just seven points in the
quarter and taking a 42-13 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Shoregals outscored Elyria 17-8 en route to the final score of 59-21. To
Elyria’s credit, they never stopped battling. In the fourth quarter, freshman Armanni Garret—who
plays primarily junior varsity but dresses for varsity—hit two three-pointers and finished as
Elyria’s leading scorer with six points. She’s a player Elyria fans should keep an eye on and be
excited about in the future.
With the win, Avon Lake improves to 5-1 on the season, including a perfect 5-0 record in
Southwestern Conference play. They head home for a matchup against Magnificat on Tuesday
in what should be one of the best girls basketball games in the state of Ohio this season.
As for Elyria, the loss drops them to 1-6 on the season (0-5 in Southwestern Conference play).
They get a 10-day break before returning to action on December 30th when they host Keystone.

The 5’11” junior led all scorers with 19 points, including a perfect 5-for-5 showing at the
free-throw line. Whatever Elyria threw her way, she was up for the challenge
