Gates Mills, Ohio – Separated by no less than two miles, Gilmour Academy and University School have engaged in a competitive rivalry series over the years.

After a classic that was the 2020 game, in which Gilmour came from a 21-6 deficit to win 26-21, the 2021 edition lived up to top billing.

And Gilmour picked up another close victory, holding off University School, 35-28.

Andy Kavcic kicked off the scoring with a two-yard scamper into the end zone to put Gilmour up 7-0 with 1:23 left in the first.

The Preppers responded on their next possession.

Joey Zigman found Brian Kellon for a big gain, and junior Ryan Pattison punched it in from two yards out to knot the score in the second stanza.

Gilmour would take the lead thanks to some trickery.

After Andy Kavcic found Dan Jevnikar for a first down, the Lancers executed a wide-receiver pass to perfection.

Kavic handed it off to Mick Hopkins, who flipped it to McCrone, who then threw it to a wide-open Jevnikar for the score.

But the Preppers responded again, when Quint Hanna ran it in from eight yards out to knot the score again.

After a reception from Jake Kavcic put Gilmour in Prepper territory, the Lancers took the lead once again.

Brother Andy handed off to Jake, who tossed it to a wide open Tommy McCrone for a 35-yard touchdown reception. This gave Gilmour Academy the 21-14 lead with 2:12 left in the first half.

After a late sack by CJ Johnson, the Lancers went to the locker room up 21-14.

The Preppers got the ball to start off the third stanza, and were driving down the field before Tommy McCrone picked off a pass to end the threat.

After what looked like a three and out, the Lancers went back to punt, but the snap went over Andy Kavcic’s head.

Somehow, he found Brayden Green open for a reception for a first down. However, two plays later, the US defense made a play of its own. Sophomore George Minello picked off a pass and the Preppers were back in business.

However, the offense was held to a three-and-out, and Gilmour took advantage.

Andy Kavcic found brother Jake on a six-yard touchdown reception to increase the lead to 28-14 with :49 left in the third quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Joey Zigman tossed a pair of scores in the fourth quarter. The first one went to Brian Kellon. Kellon had  six catches for 100 yards receiving on the day.

Gilmour responded on their ensuing drive.

On third and long, Andy Kavcic found Tommy McCrone for a 17-yard reception. McCrone had five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown reception. Two plays later, Dan Jevnikar punched it in to increase the Lancer lead lead to 35-21 with 6:22 left.

University School responded on their next drive when Joey Zigman found senior Bryce Hodge for a six-yard touchdown reception. This cut the deficit to 35-28.

Gilmour recovered the ensuing onside kick. Mick Hopkins had two huge first down runs to seal the game for the Lancers.

Not only was it a huge win for the football team, but the student section as well, who rushed the field to celebrate afterwards.
