Cleveland, Ohio – Thanks to a game-winning layup from Jezus Thomas, Garrett Morgan defeated Cleveland JFK, 34-32, in the Senate City Championship (Erie Division) Wednesday afternoon at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
Garrett Morgan came into the game looking for their first Senate title, and Cleveland JFK was looking for their third (2008, 2012).
The Falcons soared out to an 8-0 lead thanks to baskets from Abdi Hassan and Datwon Daniels. Cleveland JFK, however, answered by going on a late run to cut their deficit to 13-9.
JFK would knot the score at 17 going into the halftime break, outscoring the Falcons 8-4.
In the third quarter, the Eagles took the lead thanks to multiple connections from long range. Micah Smith, Nate Watkins, and Nicholas Lucas each sank a triple in the quarter. Smith’s triple gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, and Lucas’ beat the buzzer to give the Eagles a 28-25 lead at the end of three.
The Falcons made their move in the fourth quarter. Datwon Daniels hit a layup and converted an and-one to knot the score.
With 19.6 left, Daniels found junior forward Jezus Thomas for a go-ahead layup with :15.4 left. This gave Garrett Morgan a 34-32 lead. Cleveland JFK had one last chance, but a game-winning triple attempt rattled out.
After one final inbound, Garrett Morgan celebrated their first Senate City Championship on the boys’ side. Last week at the same arena, the girls also took home the City Championship.
Garrett Morgan (11-7) hosts John Marshall to continue Senate League play. Sophomore guard Datwon Daniels led the Falcons with 11 points, and fellow classmate Jezus Thomas had six points.
Cleveland JFK (9-9) hosts Rocky River on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. Junior guard Nicholas Lucas had nine points to lead the Fighting Eagles, followed by senior guard Nate Watkins, who had eight.
