Garfield Heights Spoils Lutheran West’s Home Opener

The Garfield Heights Bulldogs secure the win on the road versus the Lutheran West Longhorns by a score of 22-9. The Bulldogs were led to victory by their quarterback, Chase Aniton, with 121 yards passing and 33 yards rushing along with two passing touchdowns. Their running back JaMarrion Banks, ex- Longhorn, also had 184 yards on the ground with a touchdown and their wide receiver, Nehgel Pickett, hauled in 104 yards and a touchdown. Garfield Heights had a variety of big plays from the rushing and passing game to bring home their first win of the season. The Longhorn defense could not contain the big yardage plays from Chase Aniton’s arm.

The first three points in the game came from Lutheran West’s freshman Logan Lang in the first quarter by a field goal. After that Lutheran West just could not get their offense rolling against the Bulldogs defense. Quarterback Jace Palmer had 83 yards in the air as well as an interception in the end zone on a crucial 4th down try. He also had two rushing fumbles, but they were quickly recovered by him. Palmer did have the only touchdown in the game for the Longhorns with a one yard push. The Longhorns were led by their running back, J’Leon Islom. He had 23 carries for 88 yards. It wasn’t until the 4th quarter when the Longhorns connected with De’Von McDougle for five attempts that led to 55 yards.

The Garfield Heights Bulldogs defense kept the Longhorns at bay. Jordan Hill led the Bulldogs with eighth tackles as well as Jasper Gore with five, Nehgel Pickett and Malik Muntaquim both with four. Lutheran West’s defense was led by Cortlon Campbell with six tackles as well as De’Von McDougle with five, Winner Divison and Leroy Russ both with four. Lutheran West looks to bounce back with their next game at Aurora on August 30th. The Longhorns ended the night with fireworks to celebrate their first game of the season.
