Game Recap: Baldwin Wallace Vs. John Carroll

In the 36th Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy Game the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets set the tone by controlling the ball during the first half, but a second-half momentum shift would leave everyone stunned. The John Carroll Blue Streaks pulled together a 20-16 victory over the Yellow Jackets in the last OAC meeting between these cross-town rivals.

First Half

The first half was a lot of back-and-forth action. The Yellow Jackets set the tone by forcing a three-and-out. After the offense got the ball they drove it down the field with a very methodical drive. Once they got into the red zone the offense would stall out and rely on the boot of Sophomore Kicker Joeseph Evans to put 3 points up on the board for the Yellow Jackets. More back-and-forth defensive stops until the Blue Streaks started a methodical drive down the field. They, like the Yellow Jackets, stalled out after getting into the red zone and had to go for the field goal, but the Yellow Jacket defense had other plans, blocking the field goal.

In the next drive, the Yellow Jacket offense successfully drove down the field. After a Blue Streak cornerback tripped on his own feet, it left open freshman Harley Barmen for the 40-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Charlie Bubonics. The Blue Streaks would yet again drive down the field and be forced to go for 3, but the kick sailed wide left.No more action would happen in the first-half, Yellow Jackets 10, Blue Streaks 0. 

Second Half

It was as if the momentum shited in an instant after halftime concluded. The Blue Streak defense forced a three-and-out, got the ball, and drove down the field. That drive ended with a 25-yard touchdown pass from graduate student Nick Semptimphelter to fellow graduate student Tyren Montgomery.  After another three-and-out was forced by the Blue Streak defense. The Blue Streak offense marched down the field and Nemo Jenkins scored on a 3-yard handoff. Now the score sits at 14-10, with Blue Streaks leading.

After another missed Blue Streak field goal, the Yellow Jacket offense got the ball back with 7:40 remaining in the game. They create a methodical drive down the field running the clock on first and second down and complete a pass to get just past the first down marker. They do this, converting on two fourth downs along the way, all the way to the 13-yard line. The Yellow Jackets convert on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Bubonics to Tim Conwell to take the lead. The only problem, the PAT is blocked.

The score sits at 16-14, the clock all the way down to 2:25. The Blue Streaks put together a time-saving drive and march down and score a touchdown off a 10-yard pass to Kenneth Rawls, 20-16. The Blue Streaks go for two but do not convert, 52 seconds left on the clock. The Yellow Jackets had one last shot as they drove down the field with short outside passeseventually getting to the Blue Streak 25-yard line. With 2 seconds remaining on the clock, The Blue Streaks in prevent defense and with the Yellow Jackets sending all receivers to the end zone, it was a hail mary. The Yellow Jackets were not able to come down with it as the Blue Streak defenders batted the pass down after time expired.

Final score the Blue Streaks 20, Yellow Jackets 16.
