Game Preview: Miami University Vs Ohio University

The 100th edition of the “Battle of the Bricks” between Miami University and Ohio University is set to be a classic, with Miami coming into the game 2-4 and Ohio University at 4-2. As two long-standing Mid-American Conference rivals, this game has a lot on the line for both programs.

 Miami University

Offense: Miami’s offense continues to improve behind veteran leader and quarterback Brett Gabbert, who has thrown for 1,384 yards and nine touchdowns this season. While Gabbert tends to take risks, illustrated by his seven interceptions, he remains the engine that drives the RedHawks’ offensive attack. His go-to target, wide receiver Cade McDonald, leads the receiving corps with 382 yards and one touchdown, averaging 12.7 yards per catch. On the ground, running back Keyon Mozee provides a solid rushing threat, having racked up 314 yards at an impressive 5.7 yards per carry, including a long run of 66 yards.

Miami’s offense operates as a balanced attack, with Gabbert airing it out and Mozee providing a steady rushing game. While the team has struggled with consistency at times, particularly in pass protection (allowing 15 sacks), they can be dangerous when everything is clicking.

Defense: On defense, the RedHawks are led by linebacker Matt Salopek, who has totaled 53 tackles this season. Salopek’s leadership in the middle of the field is complemented by Corban Hondru, another linebacker, who has made impactful plays with two interceptions on the season. The RedHawks’ defense has been solid but not spectacular, partially due to the Redhawks’ early offensive struggles that have kept the defense on the field.

The key for the RedHawks will be to keep their defense off the field. Last week, against Eastern Michigan, the offense was impressive, as Miami scored 38 points while allowing only 14 defensively. To win this rivalry matchup, Miami will need to maintain its offensive efficiency.

 Ohio University

Offense: Ohio’s offense revolves around dual-threat quarterback Parker Navarro, who has accumulated 898 passing yards and five touchdowns through the air, while also adding 396 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Navarro’s ability to extend plays with his legs makes him a dynamic weapon. Running back Anthony Tyus III leads the Bobcats’ ground game with 595 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

In the passing game, wide receiver Coleman Owen has been Navarro’s top target, hauling in 36 catches for 514 yards and three touchdowns. The Bobcats’ offensive balance makes them difficult to defend, as Navarro’s mobility adds an extra dimension that could put Miami’s defense on its heels.

Defense: Ohio’s defense has been strong, led by linebacker Blake Leake, who leads the team with 45 tackles. The Bobcats’ defensive line, commanded by defensive end Marcel Walker-Burgess, has been effective in applying pressure, as Walker-Burgess has 2 sacks and one interception.

The key for the Bobcats will be to focus on disrupting Gabbert’s rhythm and containing Mozee to limit Miami’s offensive production. Early in the season, Gabbert showed a tendency to struggle under pressure, making him more prone to mistakes and turnovers. Ohio will need to capitalize on this by applying consistent pressure and forcing him into difficult situations to gain the upper hand in this rivalry matchup.

Prediction

In the 100th “Battle of the Bricks,” Ohio University holds the edge over Miami University due to its balanced offense and ability to apply defensive pressure. Miami’s quarterback Brett Gabbert is capable of big plays, but his tendency for turnovers under pressure could be problematic, especially with Ohio’s defense led by Blake Leake and Marcel Walker-Burgess. Meanwhile, Ohio’s dual-threat quarterback Parker Navarro, paired with running back Anthony Tyus III, adds a dynamic challenge for Miami’s defense. Although playing at home gives Miami a slight advantage, Ohio’s consistency on both sides of the ball should result in a close win.

Final score prediction: Ohio University 27 – Miami University 24
