Olmsted Falls (4-2) was able to hang around in the first half, but Avon (6-0) exploded for 42 unanswered points to win 52-10. QB Nolan Good was dazzling for the Eagles on the ground, finishing with 93 yards and five touchdowns, four of which came in the first half.
Close Game Early
After forcing a three-and-out to start the contest, Avon wasted no time in getting on the board. Owen Warrick capped off an 11-play drive with a 28-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 3-0.
A shanked punt hurt the Eagles and set up Olmsted Falls at the Avon 35. Five plays later, Jack Birch knocked in a 21-yard field goal to tie things up at 3-3 early in the second quarter. On the ensuing possession, Avon would strike for their first touchdown on an 8-yard scramble from Nolan Good to make it 10-3 Eagles.
Another error on a punt, this time a kneel down, gave the Bulldogs the ball at the Avon 10. Three plays later, Derek Neckar lowered his shoulder for a one-yard touchdown run, tying things up at 10-10.
On the Olmsted Falls kickoff, Tyler Kaufmann returned it 77 yards, setting the Eagles up at the Bulldog 8. Good called his own number again for his second touchdown, giving Avon a 17-10 lead.
After forcing another Olmsted Falls punt, the Nolan Good would strike again, this time from 13 yards out to put the Eagles up 24-10. On the following kickoff, the returner got blasted by an Avon defender, and the Eagles recovered at the 16-yard line. Five plays later, Good strolled into the end zone for his fourth touchdown of the half, and Avon took a 31-10 lead into the break.
Eagles Roll Late
After putting up 21 points in the final three and a half minutes of the first half, Avon marched right down the field on their opening drive. Good capped things off again with an 8-yard touchdown, his fifth of the game, and put Avon up 38-10 early in the third.
While they could move the ball some in the first half, the Bulldogs could get nothing going in the second as they failed to reach the end zone in four second-half tries. Midway through the third, Good would find Ty Beerbohm streaking down the middle of the field for a 45-yard touchdown, making it 45-10 and starting the running clock.
In the game’s closing minutes, Jakorion Caffey would get a touchdown of his own to make it 52-10 Eagles, a score that would hold until the finish.
Keys to the Game
Junior QB Nolan Good had himself a ball game, scoring five times in the contest. When the Bulldogs were able to force him from the pocket, Good broke out the moves and kept the defenders on skates all night. Also, credit to the special teams unit for setting up a long return and forcing a fumble on a kickoff.
Defensively, the Eagles were flying around the field, limiting any opportunities for Olmsted Falls to get back in the game. Falling behind big is a problem when you run a predominantly run-based offense, especially when facing a defense the caliber of Avon’s.
Next Week
The Bulldogs will look to get back into the win column next week when they hit the road to take on SWC foe Amherst Steele (3-3). The Comets dropped a close game to Avon Lake 32-27 on the road in Week 6.
Avon will look to continue its hot streak next Friday when they travel to Berea-Midpark (2-3). The Titans blew out Midview 37-0 in Week 6.
