Elyria Catholic Earns First Victory of 2024 At SVSM

It was a rainy night for the SVSM homecoming game against Elyria Catholic tonight.  Elyria Catholic even had problems with their bus causing a half hour delay.  However, securing their first win of the season allowed them to go home happy as they beat SVSM 28-22.

Despite the poor weather conditions there were 54 pass attempts throughout the game.  SVSM quarterback Rylan Hurley completed 4 passes on 15 attempts for 112 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.  Elyria Catholic quarterback Darrell Shumpert completed 17 passes on 30 attempts for 188 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.  Finally, the SVSM backup quarterback Will Adamson attempted 9 passes for only 10 yards and an interception.

Game recap:

After a three and out by the Irish offense Panthers quarterback Darrell Shumpert scored on a quarterback sneak to put Elyria Catholic up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 51 yard drive.  Not long after the touchdown run the poor weather caused a bad snap that was recovered by Riley Edmoundson for another Elyria Catholic touchdown putting the Panthers up 14-0 in the first quarter.  The first quarter would later end with Elyria Catholic up 14-0.

In the second quarter SVSM Quarterback Rylan Hurley was picked off by Donovan Shumpert ending a positive drive for the Irish.  After forcing a punt, Irish running back Mekhi Madison fumbled near mid field which was recovered by Elyria Catholic.  However, on the following play Panther quarterback Darrell Shumpert threw an interception to Vincent Brooks.

Later on in the second quarter Darrell Shumpert threw his second interception, this time to William McWain at the 30 yard line.  This turnover eventually led to Donald Johnson scoring on a 4 yard touchdown run to make the score 14-7 with Elyria Catholic leading.  On the next Irish possession Rylan Hurley threw a lucky 59 yard touchdown pass to Vincent Brooks that should have been intercepted, this play tied the game at 14 all.  However, Darrell Shumpert threw a 32 yard touchdown to Connor Lattea to retake the lead 21-14 at half.

On the first drive of the second half a bad snap by the Panthers resulted in a safety making the score 21-16 with Elyria Catholic still leading.  The Irish took advantage of this opportunity as Rylan Hurley threw a 33 yard touchdown to DeCarlo Prince who made a spectacular one handed catch.  However, a blocked PAT made the score 22-21 as the Irish led for the first time.

Later on in the third quarter Darrell Shumpert threw his third interception of the night to Rylan Hurley, giving the ball back to the Irish.  However, Hurley gave the ball right back as he threw his second interception ending a promising drive for the Irish.  To make matters worse for the Irish Rylan Hurley was injured on the play.  The third quarter finally ended with SVSM leading 22-21.

In the fourth quarter the Panthers fumbled the snap on a field goal attempt at the Irish 8 yard line missing a key opportunity for points.  However, Irish backup quarterback Will Adamson was not able to move the ball after the injury to Rylan Hurley.  This lack of offense eventually led to the Panthers blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown to take a 28-22 lead midway through the fourth quarter.  On the final possession for the Irish Will Adamson threw an interception on a desperate deep ball with 1:19 remaining in the game.  After the interception the Panthers kneeled the clock out to secure a 28-22 victory.
