ROCKY RIVER, OH – On February 19th, 2025, the Rocky River Pirates faced the Ellet Orangemen in an OHSAA tournament game, resulting in an Orangemen victory ending at a score of 47-37.
The first quarter started off extremely competitive as Dewey scored a basket for the Pirates, followed by one from Gray for the Orangemen. Carlin then made a two point basket for Rocky River, securing a Pirate lead. Ellet didn’t let this go on for long, though, as Tavares and Gray both made baskets. Bruder made another Pirate basket to tie the game back up before Holmes and Williams both scored for Ellet. Dewey scored four points for the Pirates followed by a three pointer from Holmes to end the quarter at a score of 13-10, Orangemen.
The energy in the gymnasium was tense going into the second quarter as both teams understood that a loss in this game would mean the end of their season. Ellet seemed determined as Gray scored a two pointer and Holmes made a three point shot to begin. The Pirates followed this up with a shot from Dewey, to which the Orangemen responded with 5 points from Keith and Gray. Bruder then scored a three pointer to end the half at a score of 25-15, Ellet.
Quarter three was full of timeouts and fouls as the game was heating up. The Pirates were eager to close the gap starting with a basket from Rocky River’s Lang. Keith then scored a three point shot for Ellet. Carlin and Lang then both scored for Rocky River, along with a basket from Holmes and a three pointer from Crooks for the Orangemen. A three point basket from Roche for the Pirates and two baskets from Holmes and Gray for Ellet ended the third with a score of 37-24, Orangemen.
The last quarter started off with a two point basket from Tavares for Ellet, and a three pointer from Bruder for Rocky River. The Orangemen then went on a scoring rampage with baskets from Gray, Tavares, and Holmes consecutively. Vladescu then scored for Rocky River, followed by Williams for Ellet.
Rocky River’s Lang then attacked the basket making 6 points in a row, along with a three point shot from Bruder. The game ended with two free throws from Ellet’s Holmes with a final score of 47-37, Orangemen.
