BROOKLYN, OH – No. 2 seed St. Edward Eagles took on No. 10 seed Avon Eagles in the regional quarterfinal of the OSHAA Hockey playoffs. The St. Edward Eagles controlled the puck for the majority of the game and won 8-1 to advance to the regional semifinals.
The St. Edward Eagles came out super strong seeing senior Leo Smith score in just the first eight seconds of the contest to put the Eagles up 1-0. Both sides came out playing super-fast and very aggressively, however, St. Edward was having their way with the puck.
Senior goalie for Avon Alex Zurawski was playing super well after the early goal to start the game. Senior Luke Schramko for the St. Edward Eagles saw the penalty box early and Avon had the advantage late. However, Avon wasn’t able to capitalize, and it was all St. Eds going into the second period.
Senior Carson Merryweather was able to start the second period off strong scoring a goal in the first minute and a half making the score 2-0 St. Edward. The Eagles started off controlling the pace of play and the puck just like they did in the first period. Junior Carter Smith was able to come back down and score a goal of his own making the score 3-0 at the 9:33 mark in the period.
Avon was having a lot of trouble trying to clear the puck from their goal. However, Smith was able to answer right back once again to score his second goal of the game to make the score 4-0 with 5:39 left to play in the second period. It was all St. Eds as senior George Blaskovic was able to score yet again for the Eagles not even a minute after the previous goal to go up 5-0.
Junior Carter Free from Avon took things into his own hands and had a breakaway that led to him being tripped, resulting in a penalty shot. Free was able to convert the penalty shot and finally get Avon on the board making the score 5-1 with just 3:46 left in the second period. Smith answered right back scoring his third goal of the game for St. Edward just 30 seconds after the penalty shot. This made the score 6-1 St. Eds going into the third period.
St. Edward was yet again controlling the puck to start the period; however, the start of this period was significantly slower to start than the previous two. Blaskovic was able to score his second goal of the game at the 10:50 mark in the final period, putting the Eagles up 7-1. This goal put the Eagles up by 6 which enforced a running clock for the remainder of the game.
St. Eds was applying a lot of pressure late despite the score. Senior Cullen McDermott was able to get in the scoring column one final time for the Eagles to make the score 8-1 with just 3:50 to go in the period. St. Eds continued to attack the Avon defense the rest of the game as time expired.
The player of the game for the St. Edward Eagles was Carter Smith with three goals and the player of the game for the Avon Eagles was Carter Free with one goal. The St. Edward Eagles will play in the regional semifinals against the winner between Rocky River and Padua.
