DELUCA: Why The 3rd Pick In The Draft Scares Me More Than It Excites Me

The Cavs were awarded the 3rd over all pick in the 2021 NBA draft. Now, that should bring nothing but excitement, but for me it brings anxiety and fear.

To me, since 2018 Cavs General Manager Koby Altman has done an okay job with what he had to work with, but I constantly get the feeling he thinks he is smarter than everyone else and that scares me. Lets look at a little history shall we?

With this not being about trades I still have to bring up the fact he traded Kyrie for a pick and players but the pick is my point. He took Collin Sexton, not the worst pic at the time or even now, he is an okay player but NOT a superstar. We will see if he is still with Cleveland at the start of next season. No one was really drafted after him that makes him a big miss.

Then 2019 Darius Garland picked number 5 was again an okay NBA player but not a super star, not even close.  Now you have taken a point guard with your top pick 2 years in a row with other options available (at the time I loved the pick)

And 2020 last year Isaac Okoro a small forward was the pick who showed promise as a rookie but again not a star

All solid players but nothing like you would hope out of #6, #5, and #5 in a draft. So, that brings us to 2021 and what really scares me. The feeling that Kobe Altman and Dan Gilbert for that matter both give the vibes of that guy who is smarter than everyone else in the room. (they are not).

There are 4 guys who are projected as the top of the cream of the crop if you will. Cade Cunningham {pg-sg} (will go number 1 to Detroit), Evan Mobley {C}, Jalen Suggs {pg}, and Jalen Green {sg}.  More likely than not all 4 will be studs. And we will have our choice between two of them!

But I fear they will be drafted #1,#2,#4,and #5. Hence my fear that they feel they are smarter than everyone else. If you look back to the previous 3 picks, the three we took all were projected to be taken after our choice by just about everyone.

Now, this could happen, and we could get a stud. It can happen but I fear it won’t go our way.

Tune in here on Kee On Sports on draft night to see how it went..

  1. Hello

    1. I may sound like a bitter Cavs fan, but you just sound like a homer. I said all 3 are good players. Yeah KPJ really turned out well for us. Sure sexton had all star buzz sure but put him on any of the 4 teams still playing and he would be lucky to get minuets. Trajan Langdon looked great on the bad cavs teams he played for… was he a top NBA player? That was not the point of this article anyways. we will see what happens! This team was not good no matter how you look at it, if they were as good as you make them to be we would not have the #3 pick in the draft. sure they had injures but it has been ran terrible for years.
