Conneaut Spartans Take 2 of 3 In Flag Football Girls Showcase!

GAME ONE RECAP

The Conneaut Spartans girls’ flag football team traveled to face the Rhoades Rams at Perry High School. It was a tight matchup that saw the Rams come out on top, winning the contest 34-20.

 

The Rams started the game off with the ball, but after a few great defensive plays from the Spartans, Conneaut got the ball back and was looking to score some early points. Conneaut started their first offensive drive running hard and moving downfield fast. However, Rhodes was able to stop the Spartans and regain possession of the ball.

 

The Rams responded quickly as they had a huge run down the field for a touchdown. The Rams attempted an extra point and converted, making the score 7-0. The Spartans answered back with a huge pass downfield to get on the goal line, where they were able to score on the very next play. The Spartans converted the extra point and tied the game 7-7.

 

Conneaut was displaying great defense, but the Rams were able to pick up a first down to keep their drive going. The Rams would score another touchdown and convert their extra point to give them the lead, making the score 14-7. As time was about to expire, Conneaut had yet another huge throw down the field to end the half.

 

The Spartans started the second half with the ball and were looking to tie the game. However, the Rams were able to get a stop as they looked to build on their 14-7 lead. Rhodes was firing down the field, hoping to make a big play, but both times, the ball was ruled incomplete. Conneaut was playing great defense as they were able to pick up an interception early into the second half.

 

The Spartans were able to put together a nice offensive drive as they were able to score another touchdown to tie the game 14-14. The Rams offense came right back out, firing down the field once again. However, a few big plays from Rhodes were able to get them into the end zone to make the score 20-14. The Rams attempted an extra point and converted, but it was called back due to a flag. Rhodes would attempt to get their extra point one more time but came up just short of converting.

 

The Conneaut offense took the field but was flustered right away by the Rams defense as Rhodes was able to get a stop and get the ball back. The Rams would have a massive run for a touchdown, but it was called back due to a flag. The Spartans would take advantage of this and have a nice defensive stand to get the ball back.

 

The Spartans offense took the field once more in hopes of making a late game comeback. Conneaut would have a huge connection downfield yet again to score a touchdown. Conneaut would attempt a two-point conversion; however, it was picked off in the endzone, and the game was tied 20-20.

 

The Rams had a huge first play as they took the field, running the ball all the way down to the goal line. This forced Conneaut to take their final timeout of the game in hopes of regrouping to make one final defensive stand and to ultimately get the ball back to win. An interesting coaching call from Conneaut allowed the Rams to score a free touchdown to work the clock in their favor.

 

Rhodes would go for a two-point conversion after their touchdown, which they would convert to make the score 28-20 with just seconds remaining. Conneaut would get the ball back, looking to make a late-game comeback, however, the Spartans would throw an interception, and the Rams would score once to make the score 34-20, ultimately ending the game.

 

Game Two

The Conneaut Spartans played their second flag football game of the day at Perry High School against the Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Lions. This was a tight contest that saw the Lions come out on top, winning 24-13.

 

The Spartans would start with the ball but would immediately turn it over as they threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. NDCL would go for an extra point but would fail to convert, making the score 6-0 early into the first half. The Spartans would take the field for their second offensive drive of the game and throw yet another interception.

 

It was all NDCL early, and their defense had the Spartans flustered. The Lions would respond with a quick touchdown after their second interception of the day. However, NDCL would fail to convert their extra point once more, making the score 12-0 in favor of the Lions.

 

The Spartans’ offense was looking to get something going after back-to-back interceptions. Conneaut had a few nice plays to start their third offensive drive, however, a tipped ball would lead to yet another interception for the Spartans, and it was all Lions. The interception woes continued as NDCL would throw their first of the game after just getting the ball back.

 

Conneaut would finally respond with a few nice plays to finally find the end zone where they were able to convert their extra point, making the score 12-7. The Lions offense would come back out in hopes of bouncing back from their interception, however, they would throw yet another one, similarly to how the Spartans started.

 

The Spartans’ offense was clicking on cylinders late into the first half. A few great plays by Conneaut led them to the goal line, where they were ultimately able to score another touchdown but failed to convert their extra point, making the score 13-12. The Lions offense was looking to score one more touchdown before the first half expired; however, yet another Conneaut interception left the Spartans in a great scoring position, but the Lions defense stood strong to send the game into the second half.

 

NDCL’s offense came out on fire with a huge catch and run to start the second half. The very next play, the Lions were able to get into the end zone but yet again failed to convert the extra point, making the score 18-13. The interception woes continued for the Spartans as they would throw yet another one, giving the ball right back to NDCL.

 

The Lions were having their way in the middle of the second half, but Conneaut was able to make a nice defensive stop to get the ball back. Conneaut was looking to regain the lead, but the Lions’ defense was too much for the Spartans as they would throw their fifth interception of the game. The Lions took advantage of this and went right back down to score another touchdown, however, they would fail to convert their extra point once more, making the score 24-13.

 

It was all NDCL in the second half, but the Spartans were taking shots down the field in hopes of making a late-game comeback. Conneaut would get a huge run to help further their chances, but the very next play, a huge pass downfield is just dropped that would’ve led to a wide-open touchdown. The Spartans would turn the ball over on downs, and the Lions would end the game with the ball.

GAME THREE

The Conneaut Spartans played their third and final flag football game at Perry High School against the Chagrin Falls Tigers. This was a one-sided affair that saw the Spartans come out victorious, winning 42-7.

 

The Spartans would start with the ball first and score a touchdown right away after a huge run downfield. Conneaut would attempt their extra point and convert, making the score 7-0 very early into the first half. Conneaut was playing great defense to start and was flustering the Tigers heavily.

 

Conneaut managed to get a stop and ultimately got the ball back. The Spartans showed no signs of slowing down as they went down and scored their second touchdown of the game to make the score 14-0. The Tigers offense took the field once more in hopes of finally finding the endzone. A huge catch and run for Chagrin Falls boosted their momentum; however, Conneaut’s great defense was able to lead to an interception that led to a touchdown.

 

The Spartans would miss their extra point and make the score 20-0 late into the first half. Chagrin Falls was finally able to get something going late as they were able to get into the endzone. This made the score 20-7 in favor of the Spartans as the first half came to a close.

 

Chagrin Falls would start the second half with the ball and immediately throw another interception that led to a touchdown. Conneaut would attempt a two-point conversion where they were unsuccessful, this made the score 26-7.

 

The Spartans would continue to control the pace of the game as Conneaut was able to get yet another interception. The Spartans would take advantage of this and go down to score another touchdown where they were able to convert a two-point conversion, making the score 34-7.

 

The Tigers’ offense was looking to score once more in hopes of making a major comeback, however, Chagrin Falls would throw another interception, and it was all Conneaut and their defense late into the half. The Tigers had a few nice defensive plays to force the Spartans to go for it on fourth down, where they were able to have a great pass into the back of the end zone for a touchdown.
