The Shaker Heights Raiders and Solon Comets took the field to start week 2 of High School Football. The Comets were led by Senior QB Charlie Bubonics who went 12/18 with 147 yards and 3 passing TDs. He had help from his two fellow seniors. One being his running back EJ Taylor. Taylor posted 118 yards rushing on 22 carries while also catching 3 passes for 39 yards and a TD. The other senior that was a big help was WR Joel Kpassou. Kpassou caught 8 passes for 54 yards and a TD.

Shaker Heights QB Flynn Bloch went 8/20 for 83 yards and an interception. Bloch also had 10 rushes for 27 yards. Shaker Runningback also had a decent day running the ball 14 times for 38 yards. WR Damion Cunningham had 2 catches for 36 yards. The Solon Comets defeated the Shaker Heights Red Raiders 34-0.

The first quarter was a defensive clinic and also full of penalties. The Comets were forced to punt on their first possession. But they got lucky as Shaker muffed the punt and Solon recovered. Solon took over in enemy territory. However, the Red Raiders defense stood tall and Solon would punt. Shaker couldn’t get anything going either though as Solon’s defense was just as tough. Senior Solon QB Charlie Bubonics would finish the quarter with 43 yards passing.

Starting the second, Shaker failed to move the ball once again and was forced to punt. Solon took over and had a beautiful drive that included Senior Running Back EJ Taylor breaking off a 26 yard run to get into the red zone. Bubonics would go on to find Junior Wideout Harley Barmen for a 16 yard TD and the game’s first points. Solon would miss the extra point and lead 6-0 with 6:30 left in the half.

Shaker got the ball back on a good return but was flagged on the next play. Senior QB Flynn Bloch would complete a 5 yard pass to TE Jackson Ward. On the very next play, disaster struck the Red Raiders as Comets LB Divad Bush jumped a pass and would end up scoring on a 25 yard pick 6. Solon would go for 2 and complete it on a trick play. RB EJ Taylor completed a pass to QB Charlie Bubonics to convert the 2. Solon leads 14-0 with 5:50 left in the half.
Shaker would receive the ball again and once again go 3 and out. It didn’t take long for the Comets to respond though as Bubonics threw a screen pass to RB EJ Taylor and he would take it 29 yards for a TD.

The Comets’ extra point attempt would be blocked and they led 20-0 with 3:25 remaining in the half. The Red Raiders tried to get the ball moving, but simply could not as they failed a 4th down conversion.

Solon would respond yet again. Bubonics and Taylor would lead the team down the field yet again and Bubonics would find Senior wideout Joel Kpassou for an 8 yard score. Solon would make the extra point and lead 27-0 at the half.

The Red Raiders started with the ball coming out of halftime and looked promising. QB Flynn Bloch had a 10 yard completion for a first down. He would then have an 18 yard run a couple plays later. But, Solon would hold them and force a punt. The next couple possessions for both teams would result in three and outs. Until midway through the 3rd when the Comets punted and the Red Raiders muffed it once again. The Comets took over from their side of the field and got huge help from both of their running backs. Solon extended the lead when Senior Running Back Brock Bowling rushed in for a 2 yard TD after EJ Taylor was shaken up a couple plays before. Solon made the extra point and led 34-0 at the end of the 3rd.

In the 4th Quarter, Shaker had a promising drive after the 29 yard reception from Junior WR Damion Cunningham. The drive would stall though after an incompletion on 4th down. The game would end with a final score of 34-0.

Tonight’s player of the game is Charlie Bubonics. The Solon QB went 12/18 with 147 yards and 3 passing touchdowns.

The Solon Comets’ (1-1) next game is at home vs Stow-Munroe Falls (1-1)

The Shaker Heights Red Raiders (0-2) next game will be at home against Dublin Jerome (2-0).
