Columbus Blue Jackets Fall Short in Home Opener

The Columbus Blue Jackets had their first home game on Monday, October 13, at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Jackets faced off against the New Jersey Devils in front of a sold-out crowd. The Blue Jackets came up short on Monday, losing the game by a score of 3-2.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Miles Wood took a high stick to the face by Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton at 6:08 in the first period. Wood did not return to the game after this incident occurred. The Devils took this as an opportunity to shift momentum and apply more pressure on the Blue Jackets.

The Columbus Blue Jackets went 0-for-5 on power plays and are currently 1-for-9 in their season. Kiril Marchenko tied the score to make it 1-1 at 8:49 in the second period after stealing the puck away from Hughes in the Jackets’ end for a breakaway. Marchenko also had a hat trick when the team faced off against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

The Devils were up 2-1 going into the third period, when they managed to get one more goal in an empty net at 19:03. The Blue Jackets quickly countered with their own goal from Dmitri Vornkov at 19:39 to make the final score 3-2. The quick retaliation was not enough to secure the win for the Jackets at their home opener.

Jet Greaves was in goal for the Blue Jackets on Monday and saved 25 of the 28 shots made by the Devils. This put Greaves’ save percentage for the night at 89.3%. Greaves made many crucial stops and managed to keep the game close on Monday.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are back at home against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, October 16. The game will be played at Nationwide Arena, and puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET. The game will also be available to watch on FanDuel Sports Network through a streaming subscription, TV provider, or through Prime Video.
