The first position battle of Cleveland Browns training camp to breakdown will be quarterback. Clearly, this one holds the most drama and intrigue behind it, also importance.
Let’s take a deeper look.
Option 1 – Joe Flacco
We all remember what he did the last time he was in Cleveland, he lit the town afire and sparked a run into the postseason. In only 8 games as a starter in 2023, Flacco went 4-1 as a starter, including 4 straight wins to get them to the playoffs. He threw for 13 touchdowns and 1,616 yards as he seemed to have chemistry with everyone on the offense.
Percentage chance to start game one for the Cleveland Browns = 50%
Option 2 – Kenny Pickett
Pickett may not be flashy, but he was solid with Pittsburgh and held an insane 7-1 record in primetime while he was there. The problem was, he wasn’t any good. Pickett played only 2 two seasons in Pittsburgh where he went 14-10 as a starter. Again, he wasn’t overwhelming, but he got the job done. For Cleveland, after the disaster of last year, that could be the best fit for them.
Pickett is coming off one year sitting the bench with the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. That could be a good thing, coming off a Super Bowl Champion team and bringing that culture with him to Cleveland, (hopefully) Sadly again, it is going to take a lot for the Browns to get past his 15-14 TD to Interception career total.
Percentage chance to start game one for the Cleveland Browns – 25%
Option 3 – Deshaun Watson
The best-case scenario is that he is healthy enough to play and possibly be traded by week 8 of the NFL Regular season. However, if he takes some miracle drug and can play by Week One, you have to start him one last time and just see if anything at all is left from his Houston Texans glory. This may be the spark he needed.
Percentage chance to start game one for the Cleveland Browns – 10%
Option 4 – Shedeur Sanders
He has a ton of the physical skills but little of the mental maturity it takes to lead. I don’t care how far or fast you can throw the ball, if you leave the locker room puzzled every time you try to relate to them, you cannot lead.
Percentage chance to start game one for the Cleveland Browns – 14%
Option 5 – Dillion Gabriel
He is smart with the ball but the arm strength is questionable. It would take a LOT for him to get past the practice squad.
