2019 Season Week Two at New York Jets
Cleveland 23 Jets 3
How ironic is it that Jet’s defensive coordinator Gregg Williams took a sick pride in hurting players to the point where their careers are put in jeopardy, and this night, it was his teams QB violently knocked from the game by Myles Garrett ending what little chance the Jets had in this one?
The Browns didn’t look great by any stretch, 9 more penalties for 85 yards and sloppy play at times, but all that aside, they will happily take the 23-3 victory and move forward with their season.
As mentioned, the Browns and Garrett knocked Jet’s starting quarterback Trevor Siemian from the game in the second quarter with several violent hits. Garrett was a game changer with 3 sacks and took residence in the Jets backfield all evening.
Simian wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire to that point, only tossing for 3 yards on 3 of 6 passing, getting sacked twice. His replacement Luke Faulk went 20 for 25 for 198 yards but never really led a touchdown threatening drive.
The only threat the Jets had left was LeVeon Bell, who was held in check by a hungry Browns D-line. Bell was throttled and held to 68 yards on 21 carries. He did have 61 yards on 10 catches as well, but the Browns defensive held him check and kept him from changing the game.
The Browns defense was the story of the night in many ways. Keeping pressure on the quarterbacks all night long and holding New York to only 262 total yards. The Browns also held the Jets to 2 of 12 on third down. Keeping the Browns defense fresh and ready to go.
On the fun side of the ball, the Browns finally gave fans what they had been thirsting for since they traded for Odell Beckham Jr the prior spring. OBJ went off for 161 yards on 6 catches, including an 89 yard catch and run from Baker Mayfield at the tail end of the third quarter to put the game away. That touchdown was the only points scored in a clunky second half.
For Baker, it was part of a 325-yard night that saw him get sacked and picked off once. His touchdown pass to OBJ was his only one of the night, and one of only two touchdowns scored during the entire game.
The other touchdown was scored by Nick Chubb at the 10:16 mark of the second. Chubb burst through a Jets blitz to score from 19 yards out and extend the Browns lead to 13-0. For Chubb, it was part of a 62 rushing yard night, along with 4 catches for 36 yards.
The Jets would cut into the 13-0 lead with a field goal mid-way through the second quarter by Sam Ficken. If you didn’t know who Sam Ficken was before the game started, the announcers spent a good 15 minutes telling you all about him as if he was the second coming of Morten Anderson.
The Browns would tack on three more in the closing moments of the half, as Austin Seibert would convert a field goal from 43 yards to make it 16-3 at the half. Siebert had a good night, converting 3 of 3 in the field goal game, making them from 23, 48 and 43 yards.
2022 Season Week 8
Cleveland 32 Cincinnati 13
The Cleveland Browns hosted the Cincinnati Bengal’s in a “Win or your season is over” type game Halloween Night. After starting out the season a promising 2-1 with a Thursday Night Prime time win over their rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers, they dropped four straight games in agonizing fashion to the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers.
The most painful part of all of that was with the sole exception of the Patriots game, the Browns had the all in their hands with a chance to win the game in the final seconds.
The same could be said for their Week Two loss against the New York Jets. Each time ,they had a chance to win when the clock struck 00:00. They would leave nothing to chance on this night however with a commanding and dominant total team win over the Bengals by a score of 32-13.
After the first 25 minutes of the game proved to be a defensive lockdown as both teams failed to score, the Browns broke through with their stud back Nick Chubb on a 3 yard rush. They moved quarterback Jacoby Brissett out wide and slid Chubb into a Wildcat formation, as well as bringing in two extra offensive linemen.
The score came with 5:07 left in the half. Following the touchdown the Bengals jumped offsides on the ensuing extra point, so browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski decided to go for two points, which Chubb cashed in on again to make it 8-0. The Browns would add a 55 yard Cade York field goal to take a 11-0 lead into the second half.
The second half was all Browns as they scored on their first three possessions to put the game out of reach 32-6 about halfway through the third quarter thanks in part to touchdown runs from Chubb and Brissett along with a 4 yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper.
On the night Nick Chubb ran for 101 yards on 23 carries with 2 scores while Brissett went 17 of 22 passing with a pick and a touchdown toss to Cooper. The win improved the Browns record to 3-5 on the season heading into a bye week, and only 3 more games until the debut of suspended quarterback Deshaun Watson.
One thing is for sure, from that Monday night in 1970 through the games played in 2022, the Browns bring it in Primetime. It could be the NFL Network on a Thursday, Faith Hill with NBC on a Sunday Night, or Hank Williams Junior on a Monday Night, the Browns fans are ready for some football!
