Cleveland Browns: 3 Takeaways From The Browns 21-18 Win

The Cleveland Browns continued their winning streak and start the preseason off 2-0. The game featured a plethora of backups from both teams with players like Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry all sitting, just to name a few players.

There were some positives to take away from the victory, but at the same time, many negatives that need to get cleaned up within the next couple of weeks.

Garrett Gilbert Has Impressive First Half

With Baker Mayfield sitting out game two of preseason action, former AAF quarterback Garrett Gilbert looked sharp making the start Saturday afternoon. The 28-year-old went 13-19 in the first half, threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns, ending the night with an impressive quarterback rating of 127.3.

Garrett threw touchdown passes to Jaelen Strong and D’Ernest Johnson in the first and second quarters. As it appears, Gilbert is battling with David Blough for the thirds and final quarterback spot on the team and with a performance like this, he appears to sit in a pretty good position heading into preseason game No.3 next week.

No True Kicker Yet For The Browns?

One area of concern for the Browns during the off-season was finding a reliable kicker heading into the 2019 season. Second-year kicker Greg Joseph had a 53-yard attempt right before the first half and pulled it wide right. It was a long field goal, but nonetheless, that was a crucial kick for Joseph to make to prove his worth and position with the team.

Newly acquired rookie Austin Seibert had his chance late in the fourth quarter when he was faced with a 52-yard attempt. He too pulled it, this time to the left and the question still remains after two preseason games; will the Browns have a reliable option at kicker they can count on throughout the course of the regular season?

Austin Corbett Struggles With Third Team Offense

A second-round pick in the 2018 draft, Austin Corbett has not been reliable and lived up to the hype thus far. He got a chance to show something with the third-team offense in the third and fourth quarters playing center, but failed mightily to impress the coaching staff.

His time on the field featured some high balls to the quarterback and him even getting burned at the line a couple of times. Him playing right guard may be something that needs to be put to rest at this point. There’s been some buzz roaming around that he may be a surprise cut and not make the 53-man final roster. Corbett needs to really show the coaches something the next two preseason games or else the end may be very near for the 23-year-old.
