The Cleveland Browns will really be put to test Sunday afternoon as they head into Foxborough, Massachusetts to face off against the New England Patriots

Coming off a bye week after the loss to the Seahawks, the Browns were left with many questions still waiting to be answered. Holding a 2-4 record heading into week eight of the season, this week’s game will be a true test to see if the team was able to make any noticeable adjustments as we inch closer to the second half of the season.

With that in mind, here are the team’s three keys to victory over the Patriots for week eight.

1. Don’t let Tom Brady get too comfortable in the pocket

Cleveland enters this week with Myles Garrett healthy enough to suit up, the player that’s tied with Tampa Bay’s Shaquil Barrett for the league-lead in sacks (9). As a team, the Browns have racked up 19 sacks, good enough to be tied for ninth-best in the league.

The team’s pass attack has been one of the bright spots for a team struggling to find its true identity this season. They certainly have the ability to make Tom Brady uncomfortable in the pocket and if they are able to build up the pressure throughout the course of the game, that’s a recipe for success Sunday afternoon.

Cleveland returns starters like Greedy Williams and Denzel Ward back in the secondary as well. In order to keep up with New England, the Browns defense has to be consistent in limiting the big-play ability along with costly penalties that have been a problem all season.

2. Keep Mayfield protected with a new-looked offensive line

Friday afternoon we found out that Greg Robinson will not be starting at the left tackle position following the team’s bye week.  After starting the team’s first six games, Robinson has been demoted to the bench.

Robinson found out he was benched from general manager John Dorsey and told reporters he respected the decision despite the roller coaster of a season up to this point:

“I spoke with Dorsey, and I respected him, honestly, and all he asked was more consistency out of me, and that’s my focus,” Robinson said to team reporters Friday afternoon. “Each day, I’m just trying to get better at one small thing, even if it’s just hand placement, my base, focusing on just all skill set, just becoming a better player.”

The Browns offensive line has given up just 22 quarterback hits all year, second-fewest in the league. Justin McCray– who was acquired in a trade with the Packers for a 2020 seventh-round draft pick– will likely be Robinson’s replacement at left tackle Sunday afternoon.

As patriots head coach Bill Belichick does so often, he will try to exploit different positions where he feels that his team has the advantage and McCray will be tested upfront. The Browns offensive line is coming off a week six game where they didn’t allow a sack.

3. Baker Mayfield must get the offense going early

The second-year pro comes into this matchup a bit banged up after suffering a hip stinger week six against the Seahawks. Mayfield has yet to throw for multiple touchdowns in a game this season while throwing for multiple interceptions in three games. Not all is on Baker, as the Browns receivers have a total of 15 dropped passes this season, the third-highest in the league.

New England has allowed just 13 plays to go for 20 or more yards on the defensive side of the ball, the second-best in the league. In addition, the Patriots defense is allowing just 223 yards per game, fewest in the NFL.

With Rashard Higgins expected to suit up for the first time since week one, that is a player who’s going to add additional pressure within New England’s secondary. Will the Browns have a new identity following the bye week? We’ll have to wait and see, but Mayfield must show improvements in the pocket and with his accuracy downfield in order to stay within striking distance.
