The season-long three-game winning streak surprisingly came to an end last week as the Browns fell to the Devlin Hodges-led Steelers. This week, however, presents a matchup where the team can swiftly turn the page and move forward.

In comes Andy Dalton and the 1-11 Bengals, who captured their first win of the season last week against the Jets. Dalton returned back as the starter for the first time since his benching in week eight.

The Browns have been battling adversity all season long and will look to keep their (very small) playoff chances alive. With that being said, here are three keys to victory against the Bengals in week 14.

  1. Feature the running game

Six. That’s the number of rushing attempts Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt had in the second half during last week’s loss to Pittsburgh. Many questions were left unanswered after last week’s loss to the Steelers. Nonetheless, all eyes point to week 14 and what needs to be established is the rushing attack.

Cleveland enters this matchup with one of the best running games in the league, not to mention Chubb leads the league in rushing yards– 1175 yards on 238 carries– while evading 56 tackles thus far, fifth-best in the league. To make this an even better matchup for Hunt and Chubb, the Bengals rush defense has allowed the most yards per game (157) and the most explosive runs this season (54).

With Baker Mayfield suffering a stinger last week late in the first half, what better way to start week 14 off against the worst team in the league than by establishing the running game.

2. Limit Andy Dalton’s big-play ability

Without A.J. Green all season, the Bengals have been paper-thin at wide receiver thus far. Speedster John Ross is set to make his return to the playing field this week against the Browns and he’ll be a player to watch for due to his game-changing speed on the outside.

In just four healthy games played this season, Ross has caught 16 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns. In fact, two of his three touchdown catches have come from 50 or more yards downfield. The 4.22 speed of Ross and the exceptional play from Tyler Boyd this season will keep the Browns struggling secondary with their hands full.

The big-play ability has been something the Bengals have been missing with Ross previously on the Injured Reserve. Ross’ touchdown catches of 66 and 55 yards earlier in the year are still the two longest plays Cincinnati has had all year. That goes to show the impact Ross has on this offense.

3. Contain Joe Mixon and the Bengal running game

With Dalton back under center last week, Joe Mixon saw a season-high in snaps (80 percent) and routes run (22). Mixon has been a featured part of the offense since week 10, as he is averaging just over 20 carries per game since that span, third-best in the league.

Running behind the 26th ranked run-blocking offensive line, Mixon has been one of the bright spots in Cincinnati when he’s given the chance. He’s just 357 yards away from having 1,000 yards rushing in back-to-back seasons.

The Browns rush defense is allowing 4.7 yards per carry and 124 rushing yards per game, both ranking 26th in the league. With the Browns defense still banged up, this can certainly be a game Mixon can bounce back from and the Cleveland defense must be able to keep him in check in order for a fourth win in the last five games.
