The Cleveland Browns enter week 13 on a three-game winning streak and alive in the playoff hunt. This may be Cleveland’s biggest game of the season as the 5-6 Browns travel to Pittsburgh to face the 6-5 Steelers with the loser likely out of the playoff picture.

Undrafted rookie Devlin Hodges is set to start Sunday afternoon’s game for the Steelers after Mason Rudolph got benched last week. Furthermore, JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Connor have been ruled out due to injuries.

It’s another perfect opportunity for the Browns to jump on the banged-up Steelers to keep their playoff hopes intact. With that being said, here are three keys to victory for week 13 against the Steelers.

  1. Protect Baker Mayfield

Bud Dupree and T.J. Watt are two players to keep an eye out for during Sunday’s game. Watt and Dupree pace the defensive side of the ball for the Steelers, with a combined 18.5 sacks between both players. Dupree has improved his play nearly every week and has recorded four sacks in the last five games.

Watt currently leads the league in quarterback hits (25) and five forced fumbles on the year. He’s swiftly become one of the league’s best edge rushers during his short time in the league. After what went down at the end of the first meeting between the two teams, I expect a very physical game on the line.

If the Browns are able to find their stride early and can capitalize on positive field position like they did last week against the Dolphins, that’ll be a recipe for another win for a resurging Browns team.

2. Offense must continue to play mistake-free football

The Browns are currently on a season-long three-game winning streak. What’s been most impressive during the streak is that the team has turned the ball over just once and Baker Mayfield appears to be improving as the season goes on.

Just how good has the Steeler defense been recently? Since week three, no team has more takeaways (26) than Pittsburgh, including a league-high 16 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries. Limiting the takeaways will go a long way for Cleveland to extend its winning streak.

During the last three games, Mayfield has thrown just one interception to seven touchdown passes. Taking care of the football has clearly been a point of emphasis for head coach Freddie Kitchens and the Browns and continuing to do so against the Steelers stingy defense will be critical, especially in the hostile environment.

3. Make Hodges uncomfortable early

During the team’s three-game winning streak, the Browns have trailed a total of just 10 minutes. It’s all about putting pressure on undrafted rookie quarterback Devlin Hodges.

If the Browns are able to maintain an early lead, that puts additional pressure on Hodges to make plays for the banged-up Steeler offense.

A simple, conservative game plan might be in play early on for a Steeler offense missing their No. 1 running back and wide receiver. The Steelers are averaging just over 11 points per game at home during the first half, one of the league’s lowest.

The Steelers have not asked Hodges to do much last week and that trend should continue this week against the Browns. Expect a lot of short, quick throws to players like Jaylen Samuels and tight end Vance McDonald as they were his go-to looks a week ago when he filled in for Rudolph.
