The Cleveland Browns are quietly on a two-game winning streak and 2-0 in conference play after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers last Thursday night. It appears that the Browns offense is starting to develop more into the offense we expected it to be at the beginning of the season.

For week 12, the Browns host the 2-8 Miami Dolphins in what is another must-win game. This week, however, the team will be missing a myriad of stars on the defensive side of the ball. The next man up mentality will be something to watch for the rest of the season due to injuries and suspensions. With that being said, here are three keys to victory for week 12 against the Dolphins.

  1. Secondary must continue to play lockdown defense

The only fully healthy position on the defensive side of the ball heading into week 12 is the cornerback group. Guys like Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, T.J. Carrie and Terrence Mitchell all expect to play a pivotal part in containing and shutting down anything Ryan Fitzpatrick may throw their way.

The Dolphins present one of the weaker wide receiver groups in the league, but fifth-year pro Davante Parker has emerged as their true No. 1 player and has been a focal point within the offense. Parker has accumulated 40 catches for 604 yards and four touchdowns through ten games of the season thus far.

Just how good has the secondary been this year? Only two wide receivers, Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods back in week three, have exceeded 100 yards receiving in a game in 2019. In addition, only two players have scored touchdowns since the team’s week seven bye week, Julian Edelman and Courtland Sutton.

It’s no secret that the secondary has been one of the best parts about the team this season and should continue its dominant play against Parker and the Dolphins inside FirstEnergy Stadium.

2. Defensive line must find new players to get to the quarterback

The Browns will be without stars Myles Garrett, Olivier Vernon and Larry Ogunjobi against the Dolphins. That means the team must find new ways of creating pressure for Ryan Fitzpatrick under center this week.

The Dolphins rushing attack is led by underperforming Kalen Ballage, so it’ll be interesting to see who can step up and make some plays on the empty defensive line. With that task at hand, the team elevated Brandin Bryant and Porter Gustin to the active roster Friday afternoon to provide depth on gameday.

Will they be on the field to make plays? That’s yet to be determined, but wouldn’t be a surprise if they both saw some playing time against Miami. Down three starters on the defensive line, this is the perfect time for some players to step up when their name is called and prove how deep the team’s defensive line really is.

3.  Feed Nick Chubb the football

Nick Chubb is coming off a 27-carry performance, the most he’s run the ball in a game this season. Demonstrating why he’s one of the best running backs in the NFL, Chubb enters week 12 with just 48 fewer yards than the game’s leading ball carrier, Christian McCaffrey.

Kareem Hunt is mostly used in the passing game, 10 carries compared to 14 catches through his first two games back from suspension, so Chubb should be able to enjoy another healthy amount of carries. Entering week 12, the Dolphins have allowed the second-most rushing yards in the league and allow 148 yards per game.

The Cleveland rushing attack has been one of the best this season. Establishing the run against the Dolphins defense should open up the passing attack for Baker Mayfield to build off another solid performance last week.
