Bay Village vs Padua
The Padua Bruins lifted the lid of the Cleveland Basketball Classic with a 40-32 win over Bay Village today. The Bruins were paced from a terrific scoring effort by Michela Cario with 17 and Alyssa Weber with 16.
Bruins head coach Jake Lantz had this to say about their dynamic together, “We played a complete game and their dynamic together is pretty good! Weber is a great kid and a pleasure to coach. “ Weber had this to add about the big win, “We’re starting to work together and not stagnant on the court.” Cario added this, “We just have to keep playing through all four quarters even if we hit a cold moment. Looking for open layers down the court will help me get open as well. “
Also scoring for Padua was Keilie Anderson with 2 and Emma Takacs with 5. While she may have not scored, I want to shout out Lexi Miller who had several big plays on defense and created numerous turnovers and jump balls.
For Bay, they were led by a terrific effort from Ruthie Bisson with 11 as she was everywhere today. Ruthie was constantly in the paint and scrapping on both ends. Quinn O’Leary had 6, with her points coming on 3 balls to end each half of play. Maddie Bigler had 2 while Grace Manoloff had 6 and Sophie Sharpnack had 2. Also scoring a point was Lucy Bisson with 4 and Lucy Mastromatteo had 1.
After a close first 5 minutes of the opening quarter, the game stood at 6-5 in favor of Bay when Weber cut to the basket and put up the easy two for the Bruins to move ahead 7-6. Shortly after, Cario hit her third bucket of the quarter to put the Bruins ahead 9-6. Cairo did a good job finding the open look and making it count. From there, Weber cut in front of a Rocket pass and took it coast to coast to extend the lead to 11-6. The score would remain that as the quarter finished with the Bruin 6-point run.
After a 4-0 run by Weber and Cairo improved the Bruin lead to 15-6, the Rockets stopped the bleeding with a beautiful spin move bucket by Lucy Bisson. A quarter with not much scoring would end on a three ball at the buzzer by Bay Village Rocket Quinn O’Leary to send the game to break with Padua on top 17-13.
After a strong start to the quarter for Bay Village that saw them cut the lead to 20-17, a quick 5-0 run by Padua following a three ball by Cario pushed the lead back out to 25-17 with 2:22 left to play in the third quarter. For Padua, Weber continued to drive the lane when she could, which caused quite a bit of contact and trips to the line. Weber hit 3 foul shots in the quarter to help extend the Padua lead to 29-19 after 3. For Bay, they simply couldn’t hit a shot under the hoop the entire quarter, missing several key chances.
Both teams played fairly even in the fourth as Padua hung on for the 40-32 victory.
Padua 11 6 12 11 = 40
Bay Village 6 7 6 12 = 32
