SANDUSKY, OH – The Clearview Clippers had their magical run end in the first round of the OHSAA football playoffs as they fell to the Perkins Pirates 51-7 Friday night. The Clearview Clippers began the season 0-4 and, after their first six games, sat at just 1-5 before going on a 4-game winning streak that put them into the playoffs. The Clippers ran into the Perkins Pirates, who were on a 6-game winning streak of their own, falling to them this Friday evening in the lopsided score.
First Half:
The Perkins Pirates wasted no time getting out to a quick lead. After two runs by running back Levi Jackson for 32 yards, quarterback Sam Schweinfurth found wide receiver Blake Parker from 32 yards out to give Perkins a 7-0 lead.
On the next Perkins drive, running back Jojo Moore got the drive started with two runs for 30 yards. Following a 20-yard pitch and catch from quarterback Sam Scheinfurth to wide receiver Conner Smith, running back Levi Jackson found the end zone from two yards out to extend the Perkins lead to 14-0.
Following another punt by Clearview, Perkins just needed a single play to extend their lead to 21-0, as the combo of Schweinfurth and Parker connected on another touchdown pass, this time from 51 yards out.
The next two times Perkins got the football, they ran the ball both times for rushing touchdowns from Levi Jackson and Jojo Moore, respectively, to extend Perkins’ lead to 34-0. The next two Perkins scores came from interceptions returned for touchdowns. The first pick-six saw defensive back DJ Johnson intercept what appeared to be a screen pass by Clearview quarterback Kam Williams. On the next Clearview drive, two-way player Connor Smith intercepted a Kam Williams pass and returned it over 60 yards to give Perkins a 48-0 lead, which they took into halftime.
Second Half:
With the running clock running, the second half only saw a combined 10 points scored between the two teams. Perkins got the ball first and turned to their backups. Backup quarterback Law Davlin found wide receiver Preston Bleie twice for a combined 16 yards. He also ran the ball for six yards to set up kicker Grant Hickman for a 48-yard field goal to extend the Pirates’ lead to 51-0.
Clearview got the ball for the first time in the second half, and the offense found a rhythm. Quarterback Kam Williams accounted for 32 yards combined through rushing and passing. His last 19 yards came through the air on a touchdown pass to wide receiver Fabian Molina, to give Clearview its first and only score of the game, making the score 51-7, the game’s final score.
With the win, Perkins improves to 8-3 on the season. They will take on the 3 seed in the Napoleon Wildcats next week. As for Clearview, their magical run has come to an end. They finish their season at 5-6.
Player of the Game: Perkins’ sophomore running back Jojo Moore who had five carries for 110 yards and a touchdown.
