Kent, Ohio – Thanks to a fifth inning single by Logan Gunnoe, the Chardon Hilltoppers defeated the Revere Minutemen, 2-1, in Game #1 of the Cancer Awareness Classic at Schoonover Stadium.
Both teams traded zeroes in the first couple of innings.
Revere got a pair of runners on thanks to back-to-back walks in the bottom of the second, and a sac bunt moved the runners over. However, Austin Leszynski got a popout and a strikeout to escape the jam.
The Minutemen broke through in the bottom of the third.
Devin Donich reached on a one-out error to short and advanced to second on a groundout. Aaron French followed up with a two-out single to left to plate Donich and put Revere ahead, 1-0.
Chardon looked to respond in the top of the fourth, as they loaded the bases with two outs. However, Ang Levak induced a flyout to end the threat.
The Toppers would load the bases in the top of the fifth. This time, they would break through, as Logan Gunnoe drove a two-out single to left field to put Chardon in front, 2-1.
Austin Leszynski responded with a three pitch, three out, bottom of the fifth inning, and the pitchers duel continued in to the bottom of the seventh. Revere got a runner on due to a walk, but a flyout to left ended the game.
The pitching was stellar on both sides Saturday afternoon. Junior pitcher Austin Leszynski threw a complete game on 86 pitches, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Revere sophomore pitcher Ang Levak threw five innings and allowed just four hits.
Chardon improved to 10-5 and will host Riverside on Monday, April 24th continue WRC play.
Revere drops to 5-6 and hosts Cuyahoga Falls on Monday, April 24th to continue Suburban League American Division play.
