Central Michigan made the travel to northeast Ohio to face off against the Akron Zips who have struggled since week one. The Chips who were looked at as a top team in the conference, now having a 1-5 record, something not to many people saw going into this season.
DJ Irons and the Zips offense moved quick to get an early lead against the Chips. Irons took a QB designed run 53 yards to the house putting the Chips in a 7-0 hole early in the game. The Chips didn’t give up quite yet, with a quick score the Chips had time to get their offense going.
Akrons defense started off strong, not allowing much for the Chips in the first quarter. This game became a punting fest early on until Central Michigan found their running game Marion Lukes showed up in a big way for the Chips. Lukes dominated in the first half as the Zips offense could not find a way to slow him down. All their first half points with a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown to give the Chips the lead.
This drought from Akron lasted them the entire first half but their bad fortunes on offense would change in the second half in a blink of an eye. The score at half ended at 14 to 7.
The second half opened with Marion Lukes run striking once again for his team to extend the lead 21-7. It seemed that the Zips were going to roll over, a trend that we’ve seen in the past in old Akron teams. Joe Moorhead’s Zips came back with a vengeance in the scoring at the end of the third quarter and the middle of the fourth.
With a tie ball game, The Zips were moving the ball effectively down to field. As the Zips got into striking distance a veer option play went wrong for Akron. Irons attempted to hand the ball off to Clyde Price III who was never aware that he was getting the ball. The ball dropped to the ground right in front of the excited Thomas Incoom. The senior defensive lineman saw nothing but open field.
“When I saw the ball the first thing I did was my eyes got wide”. Daniel George attempted to chance him down but could not get to him until he was already into the endzone. The Zips had one last try to try up the game but couldn’t get anything going thanks to the tough Central Michigan defensive line.
“The key was to not let him out of the pocket… he is a pretty athletic dude” said Incoom when asked how the defense was so effective against DJ Irons. Irons was sacked seven times in the game, six Chips were rewarded with sacks while four others were credited with a half sack.
The game ended in a 28-21 thrill helping the Chipspewas move to a 2-5 record while the Zips fall to 1-6 on the year.
