Central Michigan Chippewas

MAC West

Coach: Jim Mcelwain fourth year with team

Last year’s record: 9-4

The overcast:

Central Michigan is a team in the MAC West that has big expectations on them once again. Last year the Chippewas were one point away from heading to Detroit for the MAC championship. Sophomore QB Daniel Richardson started eight games last season winning seven of them. Richardson is the projected signal caller this year with some experience on him. The running back unit is one of the top units coming into this year with Lew Nichols and Kobe Lewis being an effective one two combo coming into the year. The defensive front of CMU should be solid for the second year in a row. The main concern is the back seven, after a few starters graduated and some transferred they have a few questions to answer at the end of camp.

Dom’s Overlook:

Central Michigan comes in as my second-best team in the conference right behind Toledo, I had them at one a month ago but changed my stance in the past few weeks. I have them winning against Toledo this year but losing to NIU for the second year in the row. This is a team that will be anchored by its offense and have good defense against the run. This is a team that will be in a lot of shoot outs and close games in the 4th quarter. Week one they travel to Oklahoma State and week four they head to Happy Valley to face Penn State. CMU is a team that could pull off a major upset against power five opponents.

Prediction:

CMU has a schedule that allows this team to have the highest win total of any MAC team in the conference. That doesn’t make them a shoe in for the MAC title, it does make a good bet for a  bowl appearance. The first game of the year, CMU heads down south to play Oklahoma State, I have them as a loss for that game. After that we could see a hot streak form for the Chips. Week two and three they have South Alabama and Bucknell both at home and both possible wins. Week four they head to happy valley to face Penn State. I have this as a close game, CMU can steal one in happy valley right before they start conference play. I have CMU with at least seven wins pushing to 10. Bowling Green and Western Michigan are two games that could cost CMU a MAC championship appearance. CMU will finish second despite beating Toledo, a team I have winning the MAC West.
