The Cavs coaching search ended this morning in shocking fashion as they announced the hiring of John Beilein. As recently as of last night, he was the head coach of the University of Michigan basketball team.
He was revered as one of the top coaches in the NCAA. It is a shocking move that is seen as a huge score for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Beilein is the fifth division one head coach to jump straight from college to the pro ranks with no stops in between since 2010. The 66-year-old signed a five-year contract to help rebuild the struggling franchise that lost 60 plus games this past season.
He led Michigan to a 278-150 record since taking over in 2007. He made Michigan a perennial Big Ten powerhouse once again, as well as leading them to a couple of National Championship games. They reached the Sweet Sixteen five times, including this past season.
The Cavaliers are coming off their worst season since 2010-2011 and have nowhere to go but up. After next season they have quite a bit of money coming off the salary cap and hope to continue to build a young nucleus of scorers.
They have veterans in Kevin Love and Tristian Thompson to lead them, and a young gun in Collin Sexton who improved dramatically throughout the season. If they can land a top 3 draft pick there is no reason that they can’t win 30 plus game next season.
Larry Nance JR is locked up for a few years, and they can continue to build around him as well. Perhaps this hire is day one of a massive momentum changing week in Cleveland Cavalier history, only time will tell.
