by The NBA Draft is now just two days away and it is a big one for the future of the Cavaliers. The new lottery odds hurt them so now they will pick at five behind New Orleans, Memphis, New York, and New Orleans again because of the Anthony Davis Trade.
The top three picks seem to be set in stone with Zion, Ja Morant, and RJ Barrett but after that it is a crapshoot. Vanderbilt point guard Darius Garland and Texas Tech shooting guard Jarrett Culver seem to be the consolation prizes if you are at pick 4 or 5. Now with New Orleans having the number four pick they could potienally trade out of that for more assets hurting the Cavs chances of drafting the player they want.
Darius Garland:
The Cavs have been linked to Garland as he only gave pre-draft workouts to the Cavaliers and Lakers (before the AD trade). How would he fit with Sexton on the court as the are both below average passers and you do not like that in your backcourt. If the Cavs were to draft Garland, it would be plausible that he would be more ball dominant than Sexton.
Jarrett Culver:
Culver is a 6’7 guard who averaged 18 points a game with Texas Tech. He needs to work on his shooting and not turning the ball over, but a backcourt of Sexton/Culver has some promise moving forward. If the Cavs stayed put this would be the player I would take his size and athleticism will translate well to the NBA.
Trading the pick:
There is another scenario in play for the Cavs they could trade down or trade up. In the scenario they trade up they would be moving up one pick to #4 ensuring they get the player they want. Or they could trade down to a team like Chicago who loves Culver or Atlanta who has a bevy of first round picks. In the scenario they trade with Chicago the Cavaliers should trade the #5 pick, Jordan Clarkson, and John Henson for the #7 pick and Zach Lavine. This would be my dream scenario for the Cavs filling out your backcourt with Sexton/Lavine and still be able to draft a wing at #7. If they traded with Atlanta it would most likely just be swapping picks like #5 for #10 and #17. This is one trade I would avoid if I was the Cavs in my opinion.
This NBA draft is crucial for the future of the Cavs and they should do everything in their power to get the best player available for making a trade to improve their roster. The NBA Draft is June 20th at 7PM on ESPN.
