Euclid, Ohio – Canfield defeated Holy Name, 38-21, in a Division III state semifinal Friday evening. The Cardinals punched their ticket to the state championship for the first time since 2005.
And it didn’t take long for them to get things started.
On the first Canfield possession, senior quarterback and Indiana commit Broc Lowry rushed for a 50-yard touchdown to kick things off on offense. The Cardinals took an early 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Holy Name would respond when Jayvon Williams rushed for a six yard touchdown. The score would knot at 7 with 6:46 left in the first.
From there, the Canfield offense would catch fire. Broc Lowry would rush for his second touchdown of the game, this time from 24 yards out. The Cardinals would take the lead, 14-7.
After forcing a Holy Name punt, it wouldn’t take long for Lowry to find the end zone once again. This time, he found it thanks to a 75 yard scamper. The Cardinals would add to their lead, 21-7, with 8:03 left in the second quarter.
And Lowry wasn’t done. He went in for the fourth time in the first half alone with :13 left. This increased the lead to 28-7.
Joel Miasek drilled a 32-yard field goal to increase the lead to 31-7. Holy Name answered with a touchdown as senior running back Austin Wondolowski punched it in from a yard out. This cut the Green Wave deficit to 31-14 late in the third quarter.
After another stop, the Green Wave found the end zone once again.
Senior quarterback Jayvon Williams found Andrew Cole, and he found Kevin Pivonka for a 75-yard touchdown toss. This cut the Green Wave deficit to 31-21 with 4:52 to play.
The Canfield Cardinals would march down the field for one more game-clinching drive. After recovering an onside kick, Broc Lowry had a huge gain for a first down to eat up more clock. Junior Danny Inglis punched in a one-yard score to increase the lead to 38-21 with 1:20 left.
Canfield advances to play Bloom-Carroll in the Division III State Title Game. This contest will next Friday afternoon at 3pm at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Both teams are looking for their first state title in school history.
