Buckeye Continues Streak of Dominance against Westlake

The Buckeye Bucks continued their streak of dominance by beating the Westlake Demons 45 to 7. The Bucks dominated in their ground attack with 325 total yards rushing. Buckeye had several key performances tonight. On the ground, Troy McCann had 17 carries for 227 yards with three touchdowns. While in the air, Bucks quarterback Casey Murray was 7 of 10 for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Treytan Widenmeyer caught those two touchdowns with 96 yards receiving. This marked Bucks Head Coach Greg Dennison’s 200th Medina County victory as he continues to build on his record that he broke last week.

The match up between the Buckeye Bucks and the Westlake Demons was highly anticipated. Both teams entered the game undefeated with something to prove. Some of the past games for these teams were tough to win despite the score, but both teams have been dominant in all of them. They both needed this win to gain points in the playoff rankings.

1st Half

Westlake started with the ball, trying to use their passing attack to quickly overtake the Bucks’. But due to the tenacious Buckeye pass rush, they were then held to a three and out and forced to punt. The Bucks immediately scored on their first drive ending with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Widenmeyer. The Bucks would score again on their second drive with a 60-yard touchdown again to Widenmeyer. So far, the Bucks look like they are in a league of their own.

With another failed drive by the Demons, the Bucks would again drive with ease with McCann leading the way. The drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown by running back Gage Nagy as the Bucks extended their lead. The Demons continued to fight back as their next drive had them running the ball rather than throwing. Running back Matthew Porcelli kept gaining chunk plays that kept the Westlake drive alive. After a nice 4th down conversion by Westlake quarterback Sam Brucchier, the Demons fumbled deep into Buckeye territory. The fumble was recovered by defensive back Zach Augustine who dived on the ball to swing momentum back to the Bucks. The Bucks would end the half scoring on their 4th straight drive, ending with a 2-yard touchdown run by McCann.

2nd Half

The Bucks continued their dominance in the second half. The Bucks opened the half with another drive being started by McCann and ending with another touchdown by McCann. Westlake, however, found a mismatch in the secondary and Brucchier threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to receiver Chace Kelly. The Bucks would respond in kind on their next drive by scoring on a 25-yard touchdown run by you guessed it, Troy McCann.

Both the Bucks and the Demons would pull out starters in the fourth quarter. Later, the Bucks would score a 39-yard field goal, with kicker Brayden Bonnet continuing to impress. With that, Westlake is unbeaten no more. They will travel back home to take on conference foe Fairview, while Buckeye will look to stay undefeated as they face Holy Name at home.

In this battle of the undefeated’s, the player of the game must go to Bucks running back Troy McCann. Despite not even playing in the fourth quarter, McCann had 17 carries for 227 yards with three touchdowns along with 18 receiving yards and a 30 plus yard return on kickoff.
