Brunswick Cruises by Medina in 69-47 Victory

Medina, OH – In the second game of the Friday night double header, the Brunswick boys looked to avenge the girls at Medina. They would do just that as they took down the Bees with ease. Trey Drexler led the way for the Blue Devils with 18 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The gameplan for the Blue Devils all week long was simple. Share the ball a little more, have other guys step up, and get the assist numbers up. Safe to say, Coach Joe Mackey’s players stepped up. Brunswick notched 14 assists on 26 made field goals.

As soon as the game started, the Brunswick Blue Devils were making the right plays. Just a couple minutes into the game, they held an 8-0 advantage. Sean Barnett led the quick burst by knocking down a couple of 3-balls. Barnett would knock down another 3-ball later in the quarter to give himself 9 points.

Aidan Shaker added 4 points in the quarter as Ethan Jean and Matt Morgan each knocked down a triple. Head Coach Joe Mackey had this to say about his team’s quick start, “The first 2 to 3 minutes of the game we really had them off balance. They were moving the ball around, getting guys wide open shots, and probably most importantly we were able to cash out. That has not always been the norm this year, but we got a lot of guys that put a lot of time in on their shots and it’s only a matter of time before they go in.”

The second quarter was no different for the Blue Devils. As a team, they authored a 9-0 scoring run to begin the frame. Seven of the nine points came from Aidan Shaker. Despite the scoring run, the Bees were still in the game. Medina outscored Brunswick 12-8 for the remainder of the quarter. The play of Jase Holland and Bryce Zufra played key roles.

The last shot of the quarter however, belonged to Brunswick’s Trey Drexler. He knocked down a mid-range jumper to beat the first half buzzer. Heading into halftime, the Brunswick Blue Devils held a 32-22 lead.

Entering the 3rd quarter with a double-digit lead, the Brunswick Blue Devils were keeping their foot on the gas. They started the 3rd quarter on a 9-2 scoring run that extended their lead to 17 points. Trey Drexler was starting to take over as well. Drexler hit multiple shots, found open guys for assists, and was all around making the right plays.

Anytime you hit a nice shot like that it’s going to get the confidence a little bit. But honestly, I was just taking what the defense was giving me all night.” said Drexler of the momentum his shot at the end of the first half gave him.

Following the buzzer at the end of the 3rd, Brunswick held a 51-36 lead. Drexler, following a low scoring 1st half, now led all scorers with 18 points heading into the final quarter.

Not much changed in the final period for either team as Brunswick once again outscored Medina. As the final buzzer sounded, the Blue Devils walked away with a 69-47 win. An unsung hero of the game may be Adin Evert who made his first start for Brunswick tonight. While he did not put any points on the board in the contest, Evert had a game-high 9 rebounds to go along with a tied game-high of 4 assists.
