Browns Use Strong Kicking Game & Defense To Top Bears 26-6

Kee On Sports relies on the generous support of their sponsors to survive and continue to be one of the premier sources for High School Sports content. We are still very much in need for sponsorship funding for the final 14 weeks of 2021. If you own a small business, or know anyone who does, please have them contact Vince McKee at coachvin14@yahoo.com to talk about what we can do for you.

The Cleveland Browns needed to rush the ball well, and get pressure on Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields if they hoped to be successful today at home.  They did both, as they ran for 215 yards on a Bears defense that had been holding opponents to just 71 a game.  They also brought the pressure to Justin Fields, sacking him a season high 9 times.  All this accounted for a 26-6 victory.

The NFL starting debut for Justin Fields was abysmal as he was held to 68 yards passing on 6 of 20 passing.  Both scoring drives, were results of a turnover on downs near midfield, and then a pass interference call deep in Browns territory.  He did not sustain an decent drive all game.

Myles Garret led the charge at Fields with a career high 4.5 sacks. Joining him in the sack brigade was Jadeveon Clowney with 2 sacks as well.  The much-hyped rookie Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah had his best game as well with 4 tackles, 3 of them solo, and a ½ sacks.

The Browns needed to get the ball to their playmakers OBJ, Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt and they did so.  Hunt caught a game high 6 passes for 74 yards.  He also ran the ball 10 times, for 81 yards including a 29-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.  OBJ caught 6 balls for 77 yards and also had a rush early in the game for 10 yards.

Nick Chubb was his ever-consistent self as he worked hard to make some dents in the Chicago defensive line to create holes.  Chubb piled up 84 more yards on 22 carries to pace the Browns rushing attack.

Baker Mayfield looked shaky in the first quarter, but would eventually settle down.  He went 19 of 31 with 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions for 246 yards.  It is the first game this season in which he didn’t throw a pick.

The added bonus today for Cleveland was the tremendous play from their new placekicker Chase Mclaughlin in just his third game with the team.  He went 4 for 4 kicking Field Goal, including a booming 57-yard field goal in the second quarter to tie the game at 3 each.

The first touchdown of the game would come with only 23 seconds left in the half as Baker Mayfield connected with Austin Hooper on a 13-yard touchdown pass. It capped off a double-digit play drive as the Browns broke into the end zone for the first time all game.

The teams would exchange field goals in the third to send the game into the fourth at 13-6 Cleveland.  It was in the fourth quarter that the Browns started cashing in drives with points.  Hunt went in on the first play of the quarter from 29 yards out to extend the lead to 20-6.  McLaughlin added two more field goals of 52 and 27 yards to put the game away and finish the scoring at 26-6.
