The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Lady Bees Basketball team has a tendency to start games slow.

Despite this, the Lady Bees have stung their opponents with defense in games and have crept back for many key victories.

Their 50-48 win against Twinsburg, was again, one of those nights.

Against the Twinsburg Lady Tigers in a Suburban League matchup, the Lady Bees earned their ninth win of the season thanks to a last second shot by Junior Caiya La for another road victory.

“It took a special play to slay a dragon tonight,” commented Lady Bees Head Coach Joe Zenir. “It’s no secret [Twinsburg] has been our kryptonite the last two years. It took a special play by a special but we got it done.”

La finished the game for the Lady Bees with 16 points.

Twinsburg, who had last played in Ohio on December 23rd, 2025 and won the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational in Florida prior to the New Year’s holiday, got off to a fast start by going up 15-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers benefitted from three balls from Senior Mackenzie Sweeney and Christian Fletcher as well as inside buckets from Junior Jaci Hutton.

The Bees only scored six points in the first quarter but defense proved to be a factor in the second quarter.

“Honestly, I said just said I love you guys, I believe in you guys, we’re better than this. Come on!, “said  Zenir when asked about what he said to the team in between the first and second quarters. “We only had four kids that played major varsity minutes before this year. We are sitting here at 9-1 and we just beat a really really really good team.”

Quick baskets from La and Josalyn Hackney would get things moving for the Lady Bees in the second quarter with some quick baskets. After that, the Bees defense started to sting the Tigers and after several steals and defensive rebounds later, Brecksville-Broadview Heights would eventually take a 17-15 lead. A basket from Lady Bees Senior Maya Woods was what gave her team the lead.

Twinsburg would eventually tie it and regain the lead briefly but it was short lived as the Bees would tie it to make it 19-19 at halftime.

After giving up 15 points in the first quarter, the Bees defense held Twinsburg to only four points in the second quarter.

Despite the Lady Bees getting some quick scores from La and a three-ball from Freshman Preslee Doubler, Twinsburg kept fighting back with baskets from Hutton. Senior Taylor Dye would eventually get a hoop and a foul to bring Twinsburg within one. A shot from inside the paint by Sweeney would give the Tigers a 33-32 lead within the final minutes of the third quarter.

The lead was short lived as the Bees would earn trip to the free-throw line where Hackney and Woods would put Brecksville-Broadview Heights up 36-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Hackney would finish the game with 12 points.

Despite the Lady Bees defense continuing to sting the Tigers along with baskets from Hackney and La, Twinsburg would eventually come within one when Mackenzie Sweeney sunk one with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bees were up 45-44 at that point.

Twinsburg would eventually take a 48-47 within the final seconds but it came down to one last chance for the Bees. With six seconds left and one chance, the ball was inbounded to La who drained the three to win it 50-48 for the Bees.

“We just played hard the entire game,” said La when discussing her last second shot. “We came down quite a bit but we were able to pick it back up. We just kept fighting and believed and we got to pull off the win.”

With the victory, Brecksville Broadview-Heights improved to 9-1 overall with a young roster that works hard.

“We practice hard every day,” said Zenir, “Our kids love each other. There’s no drama. We just believe. We feel like we are getting better every single day”.
