Brecksville, OH – The weather may have been chilly but the Brecksville Broadview Heights Bees were red hot from the start in a commanding 13-0 victory over the visiting Padua Bruins.  They were led by Cate Gutridge with 4 goals and multiple assists.  Three different Bees scored 2 goals each in the form of Sydney Gerber, Katelyn Hasenohrl and Mallory McCrodden.  The Bees rounded out their scoring attack with one each from Katie Delahunty, Jayla Collard and Ava Petros.  Goalies Abby Gomos and Lexi Toth combined for the Bee shutout.

Cate Gutridge got the scoring started early with a beautiful overhand shot to make it 1-0 Bees just 61 seconds into the action.  It wasn’t much longer until Gutridge connected again, this time on a free position goal to increase the lead to 2-0 with 9:01 to play in the first. Gutridge capped off her first period hat trick only a few moments later when she found the back of the next to increase the lead to 3-0.  The goal was assisted by a tremendous pass from Mallory McCrodden to find the open scorer.

Things went from bad to worse for Padua when the Bruins were assessed with a yellow card which led to a Katie Delahunty free possession goal with 6:50 to play in the first. Following another successful faceoff for the Bees, it was Mallory McCrodden taking it all the way for the goal.  Only seconds later, a Sidney Gerber connection off a free possession, increased the first quarter lead to 6-0 Bees with 6:14 still left on the clock.

The Bruins won the next faceoff but it didn’t result in points as a turnover behind the net handed the lemon back to the Bees.  The Bees tacked on two more from Jayla Collard and Catie Gutridge to increase the lead 8-0 by quarters end.

The Bruins started the second quarter with a nice chance to score, but couldn’t get a shot off after 2 minutes of perimeter passing led to the turnover.  A few moments later the Bruins earned another chance to strike but the shot was scooped up by Abby Gomos. Both teams went cold from there however as the first goal of the second quarter wasn’t scored until only 2:07 remained when Ava Petros took an errant pass into score.

It wasn’t much longer when Mallory McCrodden found the net again, making it 10-0 with 1:23 left to play in the opening half. The game went to half by that same score.

After a scoreless third quarter, Katelyn Hasenohrl got the Bees buzzing again with a goal at the 9:41 mark to increase the lead to 11-0.  From there, Sidney Gerber brought the lead to 12-0 off of a tremendous assist from Mallory McCrodden with 5:35 to play.  A short while later, Hasenohrl found the net for the second time on the night, as it was Gutridge with the assist to increase the lead to 13-0 with 3:25 to go.

Padua had a free possession chance at the end of the contest, but a nice save by Lexi Toth kept the shutout intact.

I spoke with Padua Bruin head coach Melissa Siedlecki after the game about her team’s ability to adjust and strengthen the defense in the second quarter, and then the second half as well, “The girls just took some extra time to consider a better way to communicate with each other and got back in the mindsight of working on things in their heads while doing them.”

The Bruins are next in action this Friday night as they host Riverside while the Bees will travel to Orange Thursday night as they look to win two in a row.
