Bishop Hartley Overpowers Elyria Catholic 48-28 To Start Their 2024 Season

Elyria – The Elyria Catholic Panthers faced off against the Bishop Hartley Hawks in a Non-Conference game hosted at Dan Reaser Stadium. Bishop Hartley’s run first offense overpowered Elyria Catholic’s defense beating Elyria Catholic by a score of 48 to 28.

Bishop Hartley got out to a quick lead with a quick drive that ended in a 33-yard touchdown handoff to Senior running back Bryson Winbush. Elyria Catholic would create a successful drive but would end up getting stalled in the redzone by the Bishop Hartley defense. Junior running back Robert Lathon would then score the next touchdown for Bishop Hartley on a 57-yard run, his longest of the night.

Elyria Catholic would then create a successful drive down the field capped off with a pass from Senior Darrell Shumpert Jr. to Senior Wide Receiver Zavior Castillo for a 33-yard catch and run. Not to be out done Bryson Winbush would return the ensuing kickoff back 91 yards for a Bishop Hartley touchdown to cap off the first quarter.

In the second quarter both teams’ defenses had goal line stands and proved to be more a difficult force. Even with these defenses flexing their guns Bishop Hartley was able to punch in another touchdown with a 3-yard run by Robert Lathon. Not to be out done Elyria Catholic would put together a drive that ended in a 4-yard catch and run into the endzone by Senior wide receiver Conner Petrus.

Things were looking promising after Elyria Catholic’s defense stopped Bishop Hartley and created a successful drive. After a goal line stand, and with the clock bearing down on them, Elyria Catholic could not get the touchdown and went for a field goal, but it missed it. Elyria Catholic would receive the kickoff to start the second half.

Elyria Catholic comes out hot and scores a touchdown on the first drive of the second half with a 29-yard catch and run by Zavior Castillo. After each team trades four and outs Elyria Catholic’s defense tries to stop Bryson Winbush, but he spun his way free from 3 defenders to get free for a 79-yard touchdown run. Elyria Catholic would then go 4 and out and Bishop Hartley would then run out the quarter on their drive. They would finish the drive with a 3-yard touchdown handoff to Robert Lathon, but the PAT would sail wide left.

Elyria Catholic would gain some momentum off the missed PAT and would drive down the field and score another touchdown off a 25-yard catch and run for Connor Petrus. Bishop Hartley would then take the next drive and run out the clock all the way down to 2:24 where Junior wide receiver Marcus Hemphill would catch a 16-yard touchdown as the last score of the night.

Player of the game for Bishop Hartley would be running back Robert Lathon rushing 135 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns. For Elyria Catholic the player of the game would be wide receiver Zavior Castillo, with 7 catches for 130 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.

Bishop Hartley looks to keep their momentum as they host Ursuline on August 30th. Elyria Catholic looks to bounce back as they host Mayfield for the first time ever, also on August 30th.
